The characters in this novel are so life-like I often forgot I was reading 'fiction'. It's set in a realistic, small town atmosphere. There are also many memorable events, several 'close to home' for me and could've described many people in my own mountain town. One incident involving a trailer and a pond sounds very 'familiar' (I think this one was real?).
Rick Queen and his family move South to Corn Still after New Jersey becomes too 'hot' for the family to live there safely. Rick, a newspaper man, exposes corruption in the big city, and after the court verdicts are handed down, the Queen family receives many threats. They hope to find peace in Corn Still, but after living with its wacky residents a while, they wonder if they've gone from the frying pan into the fire! The book is full of humor, but also has a tense, bittersweet conclusion.
