Jim Chee takes himself seriously, but Tony Hillerman only wants to tell you a great story while inclucating in you some respect for a culture you may not know. If you've read Hillerman, I don't need to tell you much. The first Chee books are wonderful because they are the development of the character. If you started with later novels, go back and read the early ones! This collection is a great place to start! Ah, but then you'll be hooked, and you'll have to buy all of Hillerman's work! DO IT!! Your reading will tell you much more than my enthusiams will do here!

In People of Darkness, Hillerman's first novel to introduce Officer Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police, Chee is forced to use all of his powers of deduction and insight to extricated himself from a deadly series of incidences involving a mysterious millionaire, a sinister, peyote-eating Indian cult, and what the New York Times called "an ingenious long-acting way of murder." In The Dark Wind, a seemingly routine stakeout at a vandalized windmill thrusts Chee into the center of a dangerous web of drugs, witchcraft, and betrayal. And in The Ghostways, a felon relocated under the Federal Witness Relocation Program sets off a chain of treachery and killings, and only Chee has the knowledge of the people and the landscape to understand the clues.

Camping Southern California Review

This is a nice basic campground review book. The best thing about it is how the campgrounds are organized and mapped. Looking through the book you will immediatly know where and in which parks/forests/recreation area the camprounds are located, and which other campgrounds are nearby. The desriptions, however, are pretty bare boned. This would be nice to buy this along with a more indepth, descriptive book, like "the best in tent camping, so cal" which I also have and recommend highly.

The Narrows Review

The Narrows
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Looking for proof that Michael Connelly is the best mystery novelist today? The Narrows is evidence enough. On a very simple level, this is a mystery novel about a serial killer, "The Poet," and at least 14 murders attributed to him in this current wave of mayhem. It's also about a complex ex-LAPD homicide detective, Harry Bosch, and a frustrated FBI Behavioral Sciences Unit reject agent, Rachel Walling. The characters are complex, conflicted, believable, and stretched beyond what is expected but not beyond the potential of each soul. Even the two major locations, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, are drawn with such intensity and multi-faceted power that they almost become characters in themselves. The plot is intricate, surprising, and challenging -- but ultimately so finely composed and exquisitely executed that even the final shock in the last few pages, while completely unsuspected, still resonates with complete authenticity and credibility. And underneath everthing beats the heart of Michael Connelly's mission: to describe the deadly dance between good and evil, a dance that comes within a hair's breadth of consuming both, but ends with hope. The book opens with the powerful intensity of the threat of evil: "I knew that my life's mission would always take me to the places where evil waits, to the places where the truth that I might find would be an ugly and horrible thing. And still I went without pause. And still I went, not being ready for the moment when evil would come from its waiting place. When it would grab at me like an animal and take me down into the black water." And it ends with the dawn of hope: "I looked out at the city and thought it was beautiful. The rain had cleaned the sky out and I could see all the way to the San Gabriels and the snow-covered peaks beyond. The air seemed to be as clean and pure as the air breathed by the Gabrielenos and the padres so many years before. I saw what they had seen in the place. It was the kind of day you felt you could build a future on." And in between is the best fiction anywhere.

Numb: A Novel Review

Numb: A Novel

Sean Ferrell grabs you by the collar and forces you to feel the physical, psychological, and emotional pain that Numb is unable or unwilling to feel. He jars you with the bizarre, distracts you with pretty women, and while you're looking the other way, pounds nails into your heart. Unlike Numb, you feel each swing of the hammer. It's like Palahniuk meets Steinbeck in a lion cage. They sit, have coffee, and play chicken with a pairing knife. You are wondering who is going to lose a finger and if the other will sew it back on. The read is refreshing and real, and I can honestly say I can't wait for his next book.

Euclid and Terex Earth-Moving Machines Review

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading Orlemann's book. As both a user and a fan of "green iron", I'm glad someone went through all the work to research the subject. Although it reads a bit on the dry side, the detailed technical data is appreciated. The most pressing questions I had, such as what happened to the Terex line and why, are sufficiently addressed by Orlemann. He also covers the transformation of Euclid from a family owned and operated company to GM's heavy equipment division. To top it all off, there is a chapter on prototypes that never made it to production, including 92 series trackloaders and an 82-30C.

DRAG STRIP Review

DRAG STRIP

In Panama City, Florida, Vincent Gambuzzo owns the exotic dance club Tiffany. To attain a little PR for the club and as a favor, Vincent sends his top attraction Sierra Lavotini to look very pretty and be pinched at the Dead Lakes Motor Speedway. Upcoming star Ruby Lee Diamond accompanies Sierra. However, the night turns rotten when a dirt track driver crashes into Sierra's car. The evening turns ugly when someone murders Ruby Lee.
Even more shocking, Sierra observed her "beau" Homicide Detective John Nailor fleeing from the scene of the corpse. Already blaming herself for the death of one of her "family", the betrayal by John shocks Sierra, who finds herself attracted to the cop. Not waiting around for the police to find the killer, Sierra begins her own brand of inquiries that place her in danger with only John to protect his woman.
DRAG STRIP, the second Lavotini mystery (see THE MIRACLE STRIP) is an entertaining blending of a police procedural with a Florida amateur sleuth tale. The story line is interesting, but the fun in this novel rests with the main character. Sierra is a zany amalgam of Catholic school guilt and exotic dancer zest that makes her a unique but cherished individual. Her relationship with John who loves her is beginning to simmer. The secondary cast adds that Florida frenzy frequently found in who-done-its set in the Sunshine State. Readers will look forward to the next Nancy Bartholomew book that hopefully will push forward the John-Sierra relationship to new heights.

Side by Side Review

Side by Side
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
John Ramsey Miller's SIDE BY SIDE, the third novel in a one-two-three punch of Winter Massey thrillers released this year, maintains the breakneck pace, vivid characterizations, and intricate plotting that I have come to expect from this gifted writer.
Once again, Winter Massey's special skills are needed. A judge's daughter and her infant son are being held hostage to insure that the judge's decision in an upcoming case is favorable to a cold-blooded killer. The woman must be rescued immediately in an operation so covert that no federal agencies can be involved. Winter, somewhat reluctantly, enters the fray as a favor to an old (and beautiful)friend. The delicate relationship that exists between Massey and Alexa, the 'off-the books' FBI agent who seeks his help, is beautifully portrayed, as is the character of Lucy, the kidnap victim -- hapless, but far from helpless. And then there's the Smoot family -- Peanut, Buck, Dixie, Curt and Burt (the twins) and Ferny Ernest -- a colorful and depraved clan of psychotics who give family values a whole new meaning.
As in his previous work, Miller hurls the reader along at top speed, careening through more twists and turns than a mountain road, to a stunning conclusion that satisfies while hinting at more to come.

Winter Massey is a former U.S. marshal who has made too many enemies on both sides of the law. Lucy Dockery is a judge's daughter who's never had to fight for anything in her life. But now Lucy and her young son have been kidnapped and sentenced to die–unless her father agrees to set a vicious criminal free. Winter Massey is the closest thing to salvation they have, but he doesn't know that the beautiful FBI agent who brought him into the case may be playing a chilling double game–and that a circle of treachery has begun to tighten around him.For Lucy, the time has come to scratch and claw for survival. For Massey, it's time to stop trusting the people he trusts most.Because in a storm of betrayal, there's only one way out.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Restoring Collector Cars Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Restoring Collector Cars

If you already know a lot about Pitman arms, rag joints, pinion gears, and harmonic balancers, then this book is probably not for you. After all, the word, "idiot," is in the title. As the new owner of a collector car who hasn't much of a clue where to start, I found it to be perfectly suited to my needs and knowledge level. The information is presented in such a way as to apply to a wide range of vehicle types, which I especially liked, since my specific vehicle interests don't correspond at all with the author's. Most importantly, the author is a good writer and the book is enjoyable to read, cover to cover. (There are a few typos, which always surprises me.) Overall, a good value and a great introduction to the topic for beginners.

Feral Review

Feral
Average Reviews:

This is one of the most extraordinary books I have ever read. Each page invites its own kind of gnosis, its own kind of translucent dialing-in to the many menus of the self: social, psychological, spiritual. Feeling myself sweetly pulled into a succession of altered states, I also found myself reading it slowly and more slowly, seeping into colors, vistas, moments of existential confrontation and resolution. Deena Metzger, already an experienced psychotherapist, mythologist and genuine seeker after truth, by coaxing a wild girl out of a tree, goes on a shamanic quest, not just for knowledge, but for a new way of being. Experience confronts innocence, and finds it experienced in ways the "wise old woman" herself is innocent. She can only teach the girl through transparency, since the girl seems clairvoyant
The woman and the girl, Tecolote ("Owl Woman") and Azul ("Blue"), are strangers to begin with, but an invisible magnetism pulls them into a mutually gnostic enterprise. This involves indwelling the minds of animals (also plants and nature, places, and probably times, as the adventure seems to take place in kairos, sacred time, rather than chronos, clock time.) There is also mutual dreaming, and the curious act of walking or flying, through the others' dreamscape; sharing predicaments, running from the same dark nemesis: the "Hunter," or the predatory spirit of modern mankind (gender pronoun intended). In fact the shadow is never avoided in these pages, which gives it also a much greater access to the light, a more nuanced truthfulness--and ultimately an optimism about what it means to be alive.
Don't read this book unless you are prepared to add some new growth-rings beneath the bark.

This novel, based on a true story, is one woman s journey out of the strictures of cultural mores and societal values of what is sane, judicious, and appropriate and into the world of the primal intelligences that churn within all of us. A girl is found in a tree, alone, seemingly frightened and unwilling to communicate with anyone. And yet she displays a certain intelligence that beckons to the woman, intrigues her with its innate and often hidden language. The woman finds herself drawn into a world of beauty and fear, intensity and passion, that eventually brings her to a new awareness of what is missing in the left-brain intelligence that so dominates our assumptions of reality. This brilliant work will bring you to the edge of what you know to be true, challenging the very tenets of your existence and opening the door to what is missing in all our lives: the awakened animal consciousness whose wild intelligence renews our passion for life, for nature, and completes our sensibilities so that we can live as equals in the web of all life as human animals, alive to the very core of our being.

Wolf Storm Review

Wolf Storm
Average Reviews:

Reviewed by Madeline McElroy (age 10) for Reader Views (9/11)When Stefan gets a role in a movie he never auditioned for, he has a chance to actually do something exciting! This movie takes place on snowy mountain top, icy and really cold. This movie is about people who land on an icy planet. They find that this is no normal planet; they find aliens, robots, mutants, and of course, wolves. The other people Stefan is working with are Jeremy, a wolf trainer, wolves, and a mean, diva girl named Raine. Raine wants everything to be her way, and she says always saying she is the best actor on set. Raine drives Stefan crazy. She is always complaining about Stefan messing up his lines and tripping from the icy walk. One time he was walking up an icy ramp holding a lantern and he tripped and the lantern fell on one of the wolves. Raine was really complaining now. The wolf trainer ran in and went crazy. They put her on some wood and brought her to the back of a truck to bring her to the vet. Stefan was saying sorry fifty times per minute. The director said it was fine, just a little accident. It wasn't a little accident for Stefan.
Now the snow has cleared out, and everyone is down shooting for the day, they are driving down to their hotels and Raine, Stefan, Jeremy, and one adult named Cecil are now alone in the lodge. They all went to bed shivering and super cold. They all woke up around 5:00 a.m. to find the windows were covered in snow and it was pitch black, the power had gone out so Jeremy grabbed a flashlight and went into the cafeteria to find some food. They found some milk and cake. They ate that. Raine said they should go look for wood to start the fire, they all went out and it took them at least a minute to take a full two steps. They found some wood. Raine started a fire in the fireplace, then they went to go look for some blankets in some movie trailers and to find more wood. Then they heard a big boom. They look around, and Cecil yells "Get out of the building!" Then snow comes rushing down - it's an avalanche. Stefan gets covered in snow and can't get up. Raine keeps yelling, "Stefan! Stefan!" Then she saw his boot...
I loved "Wolf Storm" because I love wolves and it's perfect for kids who love acting and wolves, or one of each. My favorite part is the end. My favorite scene I can make out in my head is probably how the wolves look and how the lodge looks all cut up and snow covered and furniture and glass everywhere. I love wolves, don't you? If you do, you will love this book.

When Andy and Josh enter Jake in a contest where he gets to be a supermodel's assistant, Jake starts to feel miserable. He's forced to do boring and terrible things, like get vegtables for Lanny Shanks, a famous supermodel--and he doesn't even get to meet her. But Jake gets to do a little more than meet her when the Mini-DITS do their stuff, and he switches places with Lanny! Now Jake is a supermodel with amazing hair and legs. Jake soon discovers that being a supermodel isn't the best. You barely have time to eat, and weirdos like Principal Blanco will do whatever it takes to marry you.
This is my favorite HELP! I'm Trapped book. It is the funniest one. The best parts of the book is when Jake is struggling to get away from Angus Bangus, Lanny's boyfriend, and Principal Blanco. I felt so bad for Jake at so many parts in this book. Do you think Jake would be able to deal with a guy who thinks he's his girlfriend?
