This is the best website Design Pattern book I have read so far. The book is a spare, heavily illustrated 200 pages long--not the usual bulked tome 3-4 times longer. In that space, Hoekman and Spool introduce us to Frameworks, which take advantage of Design Patterns, which will be realized with Components local to the organization and along the way they blow apart dozens of cherished misconceptions, replaced by tested, researched ideas--"this is what we've found, and this is what we actually know." They then provide some excellent Framework examples and discussion to demonstrate, including two of the messiest, most often down horribly frameworks of all: "sign up" and "search."
For the latter, the text illuminates as so far no other article or book on the subject has done, how search and browse intertwine, and without saying so explicitly, focus attention on the concept of "findability," or closer to the author's terms, "how people best find and follow a scent of information." Backing all of this up is a decade of research at UIE, so that when findings seem contrary to what one might expect, or might have heard elsewhere, they can report, "this isn't what we thought we'd find when we first did user testing...."
Some books can be read comfortably in an easy chair. Some can be read in an easy chair if you have good bookmark slips or don't mind bending pages and writing in the margins. This is one where I needed my computer nearby so that I could supplement my notes with the occasional email to staff suggesting that we rethink this or that and by the way, what did they think of making this change to that template?
Among the notes I made while reading were the addition of this book to my own course on Content Management and several class notes edits to take advantage of it.

Awakenings Review

I got an advanced reading copy of this book signed by the author at Book Expo America. I was excited to read this new urban fantasy/fantasy by Tor. It was an interesting start to a new series, but it is just that a start. The story pretty much ends right in the middle of things.
The story begins with a number of men with the same last name being hunted down by unnatural evil beings. As things unfold you find that these men came here from another world and were sworn to protect a special child. But these men can't remember anything and the child is missing. A beautiful woman comes to round up the men and remind them that the fate of their kingdom rests on the shoulders of the missing child.
I really enjoyed the beginning of this novel. There were all of these strange and supernatural evil guys hunting down regular joes who had no idea what was going on. The plot gets more interesting as things unfold, then part of the way through the book it kind of stalls out. The main reason for this is that there are just too many viewpoints being covered and it is hard to keep track of them all. You hear from five to six viewpoints throughout and the book isn't that long.
The plot is well-wrought, intricate, and spinning out to epic proportions by the end of the book. The characters were all okay, but not completely engaging. The majority of the characters were somewhat unlikable; they just didn't come off as having a ton of personality and this is probably because of the constant switching of character perspective throughout the book.
This is a strange book because it starts in a modern city and ends in a fantasy-like world; if feels like you are reading an epic fantasy but it is an urban fantasy setting for the majority of the book. There is a ton of political stuff going on in the fantasy world and I had trouble keeping it all straight.
The book ends dead in the middle of the story which is obnoxious because this wasn't advertised as a series. I hate it when books do that.
Overall it was an okay book. It has an interesting world and plot and initially started out as an engaging book. The characters are hard to get into though because the book is constantly switching viewpoint; this made the story kind of choppy and hard to stay involved in as the book went on. This is definitely the beginning of a series since the book pretty much stops right in the middle of everything (I hate this!). Although the book is decently written, I probably won't read more of this series because I just wasn't that engaged with the story or characters by the end of the book.

A Feast of Snakes: A Novel Review

This was the first novel by Harry Crews that I ever read. It may as well have been heroin because to this day I will read anything and everything he publishes. Crews writes almost tenderly about brutal, ugly people in a wasteland of frustrated desires. He grabs you by the back of the neck and holds your head down close enough to see the gorgeous, swirling iridescence of a fly's wing as it feasts on rotted meat. He propels you through the most chilling land of horrors you will ever see and yet, somehow leaves you feeling uplifted. Crews will baptize you in a lake of raw sewage laughing gleefully all the while as you struggle to understand why you feel redeemed.

We are a Home Educating family (12th year) and have 2 teenagers and 2 more coming up. After reviewing this book online, we ordered a copy, along with 2 workbooks as our son had requested "Auto Shop" as an elective this year. It is our primary text for the first semester, covering everything from purchasing your car to maintenance/repairs and basic auto care. Our son is getting more out of it than we could hope for and wants to know when there will be a sequel on 'customizing' your car! =) We decided to make it a required course/text for all teens in our fam who are looking to purchase/own their own car. We highly recommend it!!! Oh, and the CD that comes with the kit puts the 'icing on the cake', including all the administrative extras you, as instructor, will need.+++

The Best in Tent Camping: New York State: A Guide for Car Campers Who Hate RVs, Concrete Slabs, and Loud Portable Stereos (Best Tent Camping)
Average Reviews:

I had set great hopes on this book, as we love tent camping and "hate RVs, concrete slabs and loud portable stereos" (the book's subtitle).
I spent a great deal of time reading this book, making notations, going on [...] (DEC campground rez website) and finally selected Brown Tract Pond in Raquette Lake, the Adirondacks--site 69, to be specific. There were factual errors in the book (no showers at this campground, for one thing) and long story short, I don't know when the authors last visited this particular campground but site 69, described as having "breathtaking views of the pond and wilderness" was so overgrown you could not see the lake or much of anything else, and it was sandwiched between two other sites and was literally 5 feet away from other campers (one of whom had a loud dog.) There were a great many exposed tree roots cobbling site 69, so bad that you could not pitch a tent--and the site was at a huge slant--totally not level--no mention of this at all in the book. Luckily, the caretaker at the campground let us drive around and select another campsite that was open for the time period we had booked, otherwise we would have been miserable. So, I'd say this book it "OK", that it definitely gives you a broad idea, but it's not the end-all and it definitely has accuracy issues.

Fran is in Europe with her mother. But unlike what most mother-daughter teams would be doing, Fran is tagging along with her mother who is a witch in a traveling psychic faire. Fran does not feel that this is good or normal. To make it worse, Fran can read people if she touches them. Something her mother thinks she should use at the faire but which Fran is uncomfortable with. Then a sexy motorcycle rider shows up. He is the younger brother of one of Fran's few friends. He is also a very old vampire. While longevity goes with either sex, only the males can be true vampire. And if that wasn't enough, the vampire tells fran that she is his beloved and only she can lift his curse.
Now Fran has a vampire follower who almost worships her, a talent she hates, a mystery of who is robbing the faire, and everything is just confused. So Fran tries to hold off the vampire, agrees to use her talent to try and find the thief, and befriends a very special horse. Sounds simple enough until she finds herself fighting for her life against demons.
The relationship between Fran and Benedikt (the vampire) develops but it is obvious there will be more stories involving these two. The mystery was good and the action was acceptable. Katie Maxwell has created a very interesting world where demons, vampires, psychics and magic all exist. Her take on the vampire is new and fresh. This is not just a vampire teen romance. WOW!!! Another fantastic book from Melanie Sue Bowles, and another emotional rollercoaster for me!! Once again, Melanie Bowles has proven herself to be a wonderful writer who completely envelopes you in every story. After reading some chapters, I cried nonstop for several minutes, and after reading other parts, I couldn't stop laughing. I'm half-way in to the final chapter, and am already starting to get upset because the book is almost over! If it were up to me, I'd have Melanie sitting at her typewriter spitting out book after book just so we'd have another to move on to when we've finished the one we're reading! Her books, writing style, and the real-life stories of these rescued horses (like only Melanie can tell them) absolutely make you want MORE!! Melanie and Jim Bowles are ANGELS, and I thank God that Proud Spirit Sanctuary is available to the horses that need it the most. Of course I can't do it, but right now, I feel the overwhelming need to go to Arkansas to hug Melanie and Jim and kiss all the noses of all the horses even if it means chasing them down all 160 acres! PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK for everyone you know, not only for a great read, but to help the horses at Proud Spirit.
Thank you Melanie...now sit back down at that typewriter!!

Drowning in Oil: BP & the Reckless Pursuit of Profit Review

Drowning in Oil: BP and the Reckless Pursuit of Profit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When the British Petroleum (BP) drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico exploded and spewed millions of gallons of oil into the ocean, I was with the majority of Americans in being angry with BP. The arrogance of the CEO and the recounting of the poor safety record of the company was retold many times and the sight of the oil washing up on the beaches and the animals coated with it were sickening. I was happy when the Obama administration reached an agreement with BP whereby the company would put $20 billion into a fund to compensate the victims at all levels. Finally, I was disgusted when a member of the U. S. House (Joe Barton) felt the need to publicly apologize to BP for what he described as a $20 billion shakedown.
All those emotions were revisited when I read this book and another was added, depression at the realization of how callous BP is in their cost cutting measures with little regard for safety. Steffy does a superb job in revisiting the history of BP and how for decades it was effectively controlled and owned by the British government. I was puzzled by the British reaction to the disaster and how BP was defended in the British press, but after reading the history of the company I understood it. Still hated it, but at least I understood why BP is so dear to the British public heart.
I also learned why it was absurd for congressman Barton to apologize for the Obama administration's treatment of BP. The company was happy to set aside $20 billion into a fund administered by the federal government, this program deflected a lot of criticism from BP to the government and helped insulate the company against what could have been much higher costs.
Finally, it was fascinating to learn how BP is regarded by the other major oil companies, in a word "despised." Their attitude is one of thinly disguised contempt for BP's ruthless cutting of costs, poor safety record, record fines for noncompliance and the universal company policy of blaming the victims. It is a commonly held belief among the other oil companies that BP's failures has created problems for the rest of the industry as well, which has a much better safety record.
While most of the events reported in this book have been published or reported before, this collection has been superbly done. Facts presented as part of a short story don't hit as hard or as deep as when they are all collected together and reinforce each other. This is an excellent background description of why this disaster was so likely to happen.

The definitive account of how BP's win-at-all-costs culture led to this era's greatest industrial catastrophe
"A carefully and powerfully written story." Financial Times

"When an author uses a loaded word like 'reckless' in a book's title, the burden of proof is high. . . . Steffy meets the burden by demonstrating that corporate behemoth BP (formerly British Petroleum) could have prevented the 11 deaths on April 20, 2010, aboard the Deepwater Horizon. . . . The deaths and the gigantic oil spill following the sinking of Deepwater Horizon will surely become a landmark of corporate ineptness and greed for the remainder of human history, thanks in part to Steffy's remarkable account."San Antonio Express-News

"Steffy has produced a fascinating, gripping, revealing account. . . . The book details events aboard the Deepwater Horizon in April of 2010 to start, but it digs deeper into what is revealed as a culture of cost-cutting boiling over within BP. Steffy documents years of incidents and poor management decisions, detailing the rise of key characters like John Browne and Tony Hayward alongside riveting outlines of horrifying events in Texas City and at other BP locations. . . . The book reads like fiction at times, with the author's heavily-detailed accounts of explosions and conversations creating vivid, nearly fantastical images. The tragic history of BP is all-too-real, though, as the lost lives and environmental damage certainly attest to.. . . Steffy is a thorough, straightforward author. His concerns largely lie with the loss of life and the general culture of cost-cutting of BP, painting an apt and terrifying picture of rampant, steady, costly neglect."Seattle Post Intelligencer

"Steffy provides valuable insight and crucial corporate context in explaining how so much oil ended up in the Gulf of Mexico."BusinessWeek

"[Steffy's] investigations reveal a corporate culture of cost-cutting initiatives that put profits ahead of workers' lives and the environment, with repeated safety violations and an abysmal accident history. . . . Steffy details how, in the context of BP's record, the disaster was just part of a pattern of poor decision making in the relentless pursuit by BP to become the largest and most profitable oil company in the world."Booklist

About the Book

As night settled on April 20, 2010, a series of explosions rocked Deepwater Horizon, the immense semisubmersible drilling platform leased by British Petroleum, located 40 miles off the Louisiana coast. The ensuing inferno claimed 11 lives, and it would rage uncontained for two days, until its wreckage sank to a final resting place nearly a mile beneath the waves. On the ocean floor, the unit's wellhead erupted. Over the next ten weeks, as repeated attempts to cap the geyser failed, an estimated 200 million gallons of oil—the equivalent of 20 Exxon Valdez spills—spewed into the Gulf of Mexico, eventually lapping up on beaches as far away as Florida.

Drowning in Oil, by award-winning Houston Chronicle business reporter and columnist Loren Steffy—considered by many to be the writer with the best access to the story—is an unprecedented and gripping narrative of this catastrophe and how BP's winner-take-all business culture made it all but inevitable.

Through never-before-published interviews with BP executives and employees, environmental experts, and oil industry insiders, Steffy takes us behind the scenes of 100 years of BP corporate history. Beginning with the conglomerate's early gambits in the Middle East to its recent ascent among energy titans, Steff unearths the roots of the Gulf oil spill in the unwritten bargain between oil producers and consumers, whose insatiable appetites drive the search for new supplies faster, farther, and deeper.

Beyond this, the Deepwater Horizon disaster took place after a history of cost cutting in pursuit of profits, particularly under the guidance of its two most recent ex-CEOs, John Browne and Anthony Hayward.

Exhaustively researched and documented, Drowning in Oil is the first in-depth examination of how a lack of corporate responsibility and government oversight led to the biggest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. It is an objective, no-punches-pulled account of the energy industry: its environmental impact and the intense competition among stakeholders in today's oil markets.

This book puts all the pieces together, offering a definitive account of BP's pursuit of outsized profits as the industrial world awakens to the grim realities of Peak Oil.

"They fumbled around the darkened room and found an instruction manual. By flashlight, they read the starting procedures. They were doing everything right. After five or six futile tries, they gave up and headed back toward the bridge. Back on the bridge, alarms were shrieking and the captain knew they were running out of time. The subsea engineer had hit the emergency disconnect for the well, and although the control panel showed the rig should be free, it wasn't. The hydraulics were dead. Fire continued to shoot from the top of the derrick. The rig had no power, and without power, it had no pumps for the firefighting equipment, no way to shut off the flow of gas from the well, and no way to disconnect the rig from the flaming umbilical that had it tethered to the wellhead." —from Drowning in Oil

Mr. Majestyk Review

Mr. Majestyk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mr. Majestyk, an interesting name for a vietnam vet turned Melon Picker. Actually, forget Mr. Majestyk was ever in Vietnam, it isn't that critical to the story. If you knew that Mr. Majestyk was a hunter, then his hard nose attitude would still make sense.
All of that however, is an aside. Mr. Majestyk tells the story of a man that has escaped the world of Vietnam and attempts to raise a melon crop. He hires migrant workers to bring his crop in, including the love interest of the story, Nancy. And as others have put it, the job must get done.
However, where there is a job, organized is usually not far behind in Leonard's novels. Even in the American Southwest. For Mr. Majestyk, it starts with a two bit hood named Bobby Kopas that tries to muscle in his own crew to pick the product in Majestyk's fields. With a punch and a shot gun, Majestyk drives them off and starts the whole ball rolling.
After getting arrested for assaulting Kopas, Majestyk gets involved with a prison break with a Mafia Hitman named Frank Renda. The rest of the novel centers around Renda's planned revenge against Majestyk.
I just found out this morning, after having completed the novel, that Mr. Majestyk was also a movie in 1974. I'm not certain which came first - the novel or the movie. However, Leonard wrote them both. The movie stars Charles Bronson, who I can see playing Mr. Majestyk, but I think someone like Clint Eastwood, or a larger actor would have matched my image from the novel better.
Again, I digress. I guess I'm not surprised this book is also a movie. Unlike Leonard's more recent novels, Mr. Majestyk is much more action oriented than dialogue driven. That is kind of disappointing because Leonard's dialogue is the best. However, his action in this novel is some of the crispest he has written. I kept thinking to myself that I was surprised this hadn't already been turned into a movie as so many of Leonard's other novels had been - the surprise was on me I guess.
This novel is also reminiscent of an old western. The hero (Majestyk) is pursued by the villain (Renda). The law fails, so the hero must take matters into his own hand, and ultimately, there will be a big showdown at high noon. Okay, so they don't meet in the middle of town with a pair of six shooters, but its close.
I'd recommend this novel to anyone that enjoys Leonard and is looking for something a little different from him. A lot of the internal dialogue for the characters is missing in this one, but it is a quick read that tells a good story for some unlikely heros.

Sliding Home (Richmond Rogues, Book 4) Review

Sliding Home (Richmond Rogues, Book 4)

Kason Rhodes comes home from spring training to find Dayne Sheridan in his shower. Assuming the trailer was abandoned, and falling on hard times, she had taken residence in the trailer, to work on saving money and healing her broken heart (her fiance, a radio DJ, broke up with her on the air). Kason may play for the Rogues, but he is a Loner with a capitol L and wants her out. She has no where to go, and fights to stay.
I really enjoyed this book. The secondary story was just as interesting as Kason and Dayne's story, and I found myself again rooting for the Rogues, both on the field and off. For those of you who read and enjoyed Curveball, you see a lot of Psycho McMillan, who is my favorite of the "Bat Pack." There were more than a few laugh out loud moments (making love on poison ivy is never a good idea). I love sports romances, and have ready many many many! Kate Angell's Richmond Rogues are one of my favorites...right up there with Susan Elizabeth Phillips Chicago Stars and Dierdre Martin's New York Blades. I hope she continues to write more. They are now a definite auto buy for me.
This is a quick, fun story that will be great to read on that blessed first day of school when peace comes back to your house after a long summer of lots of noise. :)
Enjoy.

The man is Gabe's new business partner and is providing the funding to improve the ranch and secure its future.
Last Chance Cowboy is a moving story of dreams and triumphs. In his quest for the horse, Gabe finally finds a way to connect with his estranged daughter.
