I had to write a review for this book. It's one of those rare gems you come across and have to share.

There seems to be only two genres for authors these days, characterized by Twilight and Harry Potter. There are no vampires in this book but it does have similar angst amongst its teen characters, at a younger level. In the vein of Harry Potter, this book is similar in that a teen has to deal with not only complications in maturity but also a mystical element. This book has more of a balance of fantasy to reality seen in the Percy Jackson books, the real world affected by, in this case, dragons.

Make no mistake, this book stands on its own in being fresh and original. The very likable teens and their academy instructors have depth, defining moments, and growth. I found myself really feeling for them, wanting to intervene, as they made some poor choices. The environment is detailed yet comfortable with just enough quirks to make it believable that dragons could exist in our reality. At no time did I feel I knew what would happen, there were many directions the story could take, and I look forward to seeing where this, (hopefully), series will go.
Just for reference I'm a guy in his (hate to say it) late thirties, so I feel this book can be enjoyed by anyone.
I would ask the author to please add the option of Amazon's CreateSpace publishing, so I can on-demand order a hard copy to add to my collection.

The Afterlife Codes: Searching for Evidence of the Survival of the Soul Review

The Afterlife Codes: Searching for Evidence of the Survival of the Soul

Contrary to the title, this is a very interesting autobiography. Only the introduction and the first and final chapters deal with the author's plan to provide an internet service by which people might be able to send a code from the Afterlife to prove their continued existence. Frankly, I had no desire to read 242 pages dealing with codes; therefore, I procrastinated in buying and reading this book. Once I got into it, however, I had a hard time putting it down.
Smith, who was born in 1911 and passed into spirit a few months ago, was the author of more than 30 books, mostly on metaphysical subjects. In her younger years, including her days as a journalism major at the University of Texas, she was not interested in spiritual matters. In fact, she was a cynical agnostic. It was not until after she was into her 30s that she discovered she had the gift of automatic writing. "It was the most peculiar feeling I'd ever experienced," she explains. "The hand was just writing by itself without my conscious will being involved in any way. It wrote scragglingly across the page in run-together words."
Smith received a number of messages from her mother as well as from "intruding" spirits. Later, she began hearing from a spirit who identified himself as James Anderson. Later, Smith figured out that Anderson was the famous psychologist/philosopher William James of Harvard. James admitted that he used a pseudonym, because he figured that if he came to her with a celebrated name, she would not believe him. Smith states that she wouldn't have. Of course, the pseudo-skeptics, i.e., the cynics, would scoff at this whole idea, but Smith established herself as a very credible investigator and reporter during her career.
The introduction and conclusion to the book are written by Drs. Gary Schwartz and Linda Russek, authors of "The Living Energy Universe." Schwartz recently published "The Afterlife Experiments," reporting on his study of five famous mediums at his Human Energy Systems Laboratory at the University of Arizona. Schwartz and Russek had met Smith and had encouraged her to write her final book. As they state, the book is "a good read that is also a philosophical experience and a heartwarming adventure."

Down by the Riverside (Shady Grove Mystery Series #1) Review

Down by the Riverside (Shady Grove Mystery Series #1)

I confess: I chose this book from the shelf because of the sweet watercolor painting on the jacket (I paint when I can book the books down.) At first I thought I would not like it: the plot seemed pat (see other reviews for a summary) and the mystery aspect especially so. But I was soon pleased and touched by the story, as sweet and simple as the picture on the cover. The mystery turns out to be about an interesting aspect of Mississippi River history, but the mystery is not the point; this is a book about relationship and kinship, about trust and love and giving, and about families and how we find them. It's not Great Literature, and some will be turned off by the occasional visit of Angels from the Other Side, but I'm glad I was brought to it and glad I stayed.

Raising Mama: A Memoir Review

Raising Mama: A Memoir

This is the story of the music, politics and culture during a seminal period of the ''baby boom'', 1958-1962. It's an often hilarious story told from a most unlikely point of view; a precocious child born to a dirt-poor Southern woman. RAISING MAMA is a memoir. The voice is from the point of view of a child who became virtually an adult at age ten. RAISING MAMA is a road trip. Larry Sullivan, the voice and lead character, attends eight schools in five states in five years, 1958-1962. His mother's favorite husband is a career criminal and, for Larry, reality is one surreal situation after another. RAISING MAMA is an American saga. It's a love story rivaling ROMEO & JULIET. It's TOM SAWYER in Jack Kerouac's world.

It's TOM SAWYER in Jack Kerouac's world. The stream of consciousness narration is a literate voice from the underclass. Larry and his mother, Dot, are Cherokee descendants and their life is a matriarchy in constant conflict with the dominant culture. Larry is from Memphis, Tennessee and watches Rock 'n Roll being born in his hometown. All women who have committed to a relationship, had a child or participated in the workforce will understand Dot's plight. Few will understand Dot's reaction to her circumstances; sometimes hilarious, but frequently tragic. The family is irrevocably affected by the Cold War as Larry's step-dad tries to go straight for once. There is even a brush with infamy as MAMA works for one night for one of Jack Ruby's businesses. The narration describes the late 1950's as they were; with their racial tensions, anti-Communism and the beginnings of Rock 'n Roll and the counter-culture.

Sleight: Book One of the AVRA-K (Volume 1) Review

Sleight: Book One of the AVRA-K (Volume 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I fell in love with this book and got teary eyed in the first chapter. Actually, I was teary eyed through a lot of this book. It opens up at a funeral where Gemma is burying her mom. She didn't know her mom all that well, besides the fact that she was crazy, and she doesn't know who her dad is. So, Gemma got to full fill so many kid's dreams and grew up in the circus! That's not even the most interesting thing about her; the most interesting thing is, she can see shades (ghost).
The traveling circus that she is living with stays in one place for the first time for months and she has to start regular school for the very first time. She has never stayed in a place long enough to make close friends or fall in love. Her closed friends are two elephants and two acrobats. That all changes when she meets Henry Dmitri and it was love at first sight.
Everything is going great until one day she sees a letter comes for her with her Mother's writing on it and the people that she is closest to hides it from her. She suddenly realizes that almost everyone around her is keeping secrets from her and she stops at nothing to uncover the truth but is it something she really wants to know? Once the secrets are brought to life the action doesn't stop.
When you first look at this book you may think to yourself, "Wow, this is a long story." But once you start reading it and the more you get involved with it you realize it's not long enough especially at the end.
Jennifer knows how to suck the readers in and make them feel part of the story every step of the way. I can't wait for the second one to come out; I am dying to know what happens next. I recommend this to everyone.
5 out of 5

The Rockford Files: The Green Bottle: One Cop's War Against The Mob Review

The Rockford Files: The Green Bottle: One Cop's War Against The Mob
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Stuart Kaminsky has written an enjoyable and satisfying novel based on the characters from the television series, "The Rockford Files." Jim, Beth, Dennis, Angel, and the Firebird are all here in form true to the original characters.
Jim Rockford is older now; mourning the loss of his father, Rocky; battling bad knees; trying to elude Angel's ubiquitous scams; and reflecting on his relationship with Beth and what might have been. Despite the passing of the years, Jim retains his wry wit and keen observations of the human condition. Mr. Kaminsky provides additional insight into the character of Jim Rockford, particularly the formative years and the time in prison.
The story is well-paced and intriguing. I enjoyed this book more than many of the recent 2-hour "Rockford Files" movies presented on television in recent years. If you enjoyed the original "Rockford Files" series from 1974-1980, you will enjoy this book.

The Secret of the Mansion (Trixie Belden #1) Review

The Secret of the Mansion (Trixie Belden #1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a wonderful introduction to a great series of books for young girls. I read the first six when I was 10 years old, and I fell in love with Trixie and her friends. Those stories were written by Julie Campbell in the 1950's and republished in the 1960's. Kathryn Kenny took over with book seven in the late '60's. Readers will notice a change in Trixie's personality and in the focus of the stories. Kenny introduces more of the history of the Hudson River Valley, and includes more facts and less of the banter and teasing that made me so fond of the original books. However, the books which Kenny continued writing into the '70's and the '80's, which I bought for my daughter, are entertaining, if not quite as much fun as the original six. The Red Trailer Mystery, the sequal to the Secret of the Mansion, is also a must to read for anyone who wants to get the full story of how Jim came to be Honey's adopted brother, The Gatehouse Mystery explains the formation of the Bob White club, The Mysterious Visitor chronicles the advent of Diana Lynch into the group. Book five, The Mystery Off Glen Road is a personal favorite of mine, an absolutely hilarious book telling of Trixie's attempts to become a 'lady', not to impress Jim, but for such convoluted reasons that she has her entire family in an uproar. I hope that like the Nancy Drew mysteries, some publisher who knows a good thing when he sees it, will update the Trixie Belden books and republish them for the next generation. I would hate to see this series that has brought so much pleasure and happiness to so many girls be lost forever.

German V-Weapon Sites 1943-45 (Fortress) Review

German V-Weapon Sites 1943-45 (Fortress)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An Osprey Fortress series volume on German V-Weapon sites may not seem that gripping to many readers, who prefer to read about the actual V-1 and V-2 rockets, but this volume offers a great deal. As usual, you cannot pick up a volume written by Steven J Zaloga without reading something new and insightful that you haven't seen before in other books, so this volume starts with that advantage. Further, this volume is not just about "sites," but about the cat-and-mouse game between the Germans to establish their V-weapon launching sites and the Allied efforts to detect and destroy them. Hitler was intent upon using the V-weapons (Revenge weapons) to retaliate against Allied civilians, which became more vital to him as Germany's fortunes on the battlefield waned. Nor is this merely a nostalgic look at obsolete weapons; as Zaloga makes clear, the whole issue of countering fixed and mobile missiles was revisited again during the "Great Scud Hunt" during Desert Storm in 1991. In an era when a number of countries are deploying mobile tactical missiles, this subject remains a vital national security concern and Steven Zaloga's volume is a perfect starting point to understanding the dynamics of this type of weapons system from both sides of the hill.
The volume begins with an overview of the German V-Weapons programs (the V-1 and V-2 were covered in earlier New Vanguard titles by Zaloga), which includes the HDP pump gun and the Rheinbote rocket, as well as the V-1 and V-2. Initially, the German preference was to build large, well-protected fixed launching sites in France near the Channel Coast. However, these sites were relatively easy for the Allies to detect and Zaloga details the devastating RAF attacks against these sites with Tallboy bombs. Zaloga also makes the interesting point that the shortage of liquid oxygen for the missiles severely limited Germany's V-weapons launch rates even without any Allied interference. After the initial fixed sites were disrupted by Allied bombing, the Germans tried a new pattern of fixed sites that were less conspicuous and better protected, but most of these were bombed as well. As the author notes, the Germans had to make the choice between using large, fixed sites that could sustain a fairly respectable launch rate or opt for mobile launch sites that offered better survivability but poor launch rates. Essentially, the effectiveness of the Allied bombing effort drove the Germans to embrace the mobile basing concept. Mobile V-weapon sites proved to be far more difficult to detect but the initial missile barrages against London were much smaller than intended, due to the limitations of this method. Eventually, the Germans also introduced air-launched V-1s from bombers, but the author notes that this delivery method afforded a 50-mile CEP and a very high failure rate. Ultimately, the author says the V-weapons campaign was a massive flop - costing Germany three times as much as the Manhattan Project - in no small measure due to the ineffective launching methods forced upon the Germans by Allied counter-responses.
The photos in this volume are terrific, particularly color photos of the restored V-1s on launch ramps in the UK and Belgium. The color plates are also superb, showing all the various types of heavy launch sites, V-1s on ramps, a V-2 mobile launch site (really terrific) and the HDP gun site. The author also provides a very useful bibliography. One aspect of the volume that I particularly enjoyed was the space devoted to the HDP gun and how it was used to bombard Luxemburg City - this was one V-weapon that you don't hear about much but the author provides several great photos of it. He also notes that the Iraqi attempt to build a `supergun' was based upon the HDP concept and just as much a failure. This is a book not only to read and enjoy now, but to keep on the shelf of military professionals as a reference for the next time that some lunatic threatens to shower missiles upon a civilian population.

Designed to change the course of the war, the V-weapons required ambitious plans to defend their expensive and complicated launch sites. Steven J Zaloga describes the configuration and planned deployment of heavy missile sites, as well as the unique Allied tactics developed to counter this threat, including a remote-control version of the B-17 bomber. Covering the V-1 ski sites, the mobile units employed for V-2 launches and other secret weapons bases like the "V-3" high-pressure gun at Mimoyeques, he reviews the impact of these weapon systems and defenses not only on World War II but also on the development of modern weaponry. This book is an excellent guide to the sites described, many of which still survive and are visited on battlefield tours.

Jet Boats: A Complete Guide to Purchasing, Operating and Maintaining Your Jet Boat Review

Jet Boats: A Complete Guide to Purchasing, Operating and Maintaining Your Jet Boat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Chances are that if you are reading this review you will be aware that there is not a plethora of writing about jet boats.
Mr Krinak started jet boating in 1990 and obviously got the bug, and felt strongly enough about it to write this his first book, seven years later.
It is an honest and forthright account of types, sytems, buying advice, maintenance and basic piloting techniques. The authors style is personable and anecdotal. His personal background as a career aviator is quite apparent, as evidenced by a three page section on the selection of proper sunglasses. But for all that, its not intrusive. There are plenty of B/W photographs and a reasonable number of diagrams.
The main points of criticism are that, while ostensibly a book about jet boating in general, its information is mainly relevant to the American Pacific Northwest. All the boats are huge by international standards and there could be more discussion about the variety of boat styles and applications. Also the term "jet sled" is unknown outside the USA.
The section detailing the two main types of jet units has no diagrams and fails to note the axial-type pumps get a boat up on plane quicker. Similarly there is no discussion on deep V hulls, fuel preparation, specific engine configurations, bilge pumps, whitewater splash covers or the use of heat exchangers. Might have been good to see some historical info and an index as well.
Perhaps we might see a second edition that addresses some of these areas.
These criticisms aside, a jolly good first book and probably a "must-buy" for someone getting into the sport. And well done to Mr Kirnak for having the courage of his convictions to write it.
