I have been suscribed to Jessica's HorseSense online newsletter for some time, and as soon as I found out she was putting a book together I knew I had to have it. I recommend it to ANYONE who wants to know more about horse behavior. Jessica explains everything in an easy to read and easy to understand manner. She addresses almost every problem that horse owners and horse riders have and the advice is just plain great. I would love some day to be able to meet her to share my admiration of her knowledge.

Think Outside the Box Office: The Ultimate Guide to Film Distribution and Marketing for the Digital Era Review

Think Outside the Box Office: The Ultimate Guide to Film Distribution and Marketing for the Digital Era
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered Reiss' book as soon as I heard about it, as I had just finished shooting my first feature film this summer. I wish we had this book last year! But we are still in post-production so we'll get at least a metric ton of valuable information even at this point in the process to put into use before we finish the final edit and release our film. Now, the question is: how will we release it?
Many people would tell you the film business is somewhat broken and you cannot rely on a huge win at a festival and having your film bought and vaulted to hundreds of screens. This being the case, you have to work a little harder, you have to know how to manage your rights (digital and otherwise), how to market and reach your audience yourself and more than you ever thought as a filmmaker. Jon's book is very timely, full of current information (but he should sell it with a PDF update for future revisions!) and has answers to all types of questions. Theatrical? Festival? DVD? VOD? Streaming? BitTorrent? And how much time and money does this all take to do this DIY (do it yourself) anyway? How do I use social media to reach my audience? There are a million questions and Jon covers them all, and ably, too. I cannot recommend this book enough, especially for the price. Get yours now before Reiss figures out what a goldmine he's got here and starts charging $2,995 for a seminar that covers the same! Seriously, you could spend a lot of money on seminars and such and not get as much value as you get in "Think Outside the Box Office."

The independent film community is a buzz with the collapse of the traditional independent film distribution model. No longer can filmmakers expect their films to be acquired and released nationally. But just as the digital revolution created a democratization of the means of production, a new hybrid model of distribution has created a way for independent filmmakers to take control of the means of distribution. This hybrid approach is not just DIY or Web based it combines the best techniques from each distribution arena, old and new. Jon Reiss spoke with countless filmmakers, distributors, publicists, web programmers, festival programmers and marketing experts to create this ultimate guide to film distribution and marketing for the digital era. Unlike any other book on the subject, Think Outside the Box Office is the first to address the new distribution and marketing landscape facing filmmakers today. Throughout the book, Reiss redefines the process from a filmmaker s point of view empowering the reader to create unique strategies for their individual films. Filmmakers are hungry for information on how to distribute and market their films. No single resource exists that combines all of the knowledge and tools now available to them. Think Outside the Box Office fills that void. The book is a break through step-by-step nuts and bolts guide to distributing and marketing a film. Each chapter addresses an essential aspect of a film s release and offers specific techniques so filmmakers can take control of their distribution and marketing destiny. Instead of buying multiple out of date books and searching the web for hints and tips now all of this information is available in one place for the first time. Topics include: o Audience identification and targeting o Negotiating split rights agreements for your film. o A reclassification of film rights from a filmmaker s perspective. o Your distribution and marketing team. o Integrating marketing into your production and post o Social networking crowdsourcing and crowdfunding. o Budgeting for distribution and marketing. o Redefining the theatrical release. o Booking a conventional and unconventional theatrical release. o The new role of film festivals. o Conventional and web marketing. o How to sell DVDs with a distributor and on your own. o How to negotiate with digital distributors and aggregators. o How to DIY your digital rights. o Using transmedia for marketing and expanded creativity.

Old World Murder (A Chloe Ellefson Mystery) Review

Old World Murder (A Chloe Ellefson Mystery)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Kathleen Ernst's first adult novel is a great read. Chloe Ellefson is a newly hired curator at Old World Wisconsin, an actual pioneer living history museum in the Kettle Moraine area of Wisconsin. She starts off not only with the challenge of putting to order the museum's artifact collections, but also putting her personal life to order after the break-up of a difficult romance. Add to that some difficult staff supervisors, missing artifacts, and even possible murders to deal with. You can easily picture the museum settings of lanes leading to pioneer homes and log cabins, and settlers in period clothing working in the homes and fields. The settings and characters are beautifully developed. The plot has many interesting twists and turns. Throw in some humor and lots of mystery, adventure, and personal challenges, and you have a great read. Towards the end, I had to stay up way past my bedtime to find out "who done it." I hope another Chloe Ellefson book is in the making. I can't wait to find out what happens next. Charlotte Shirven

I started out with the New York state CDL test prep book that you get free from DMV. It seemed a little stodgy with older illustrations. I ordered this book thinking it would be much clearer, better illustrations, and more up-to-date. I was wrong. This book is WAY too much fluff, full of info you don't need to know, overmentions law numbers as if that's important, and is basically a big disappointment. Please, Barron's EDIT this training manual...it's full of inconsistencies and poor writing. I have wasted ~10 precious hours trying to get through this. Now I'm back on the NY manual and, boy is it ever straight-forward. I will probably use the Barron's book for the practice tests, but I'm sorry I ordered it originally and then wasted study time trying to get through it.

Tony and Susan Review

Tony and Susan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

The late Austin Wright gave readers a beautiful gift with Tony and Susan. He presented parallel stories, ushering us into two fictional worlds both of which are irresistibly compelling.
We first meet Susan Morrow who is surprised to hear from her first husband after 20 years - he has written a book, and would she like to read it? "Damn! But this book is good. How much he had learned about life and craft. He wanted to show her, let her read and see, judge for herself. " When they were married this had been a touchy subject; she was a harsh critic and he was a nascent writer.
She receives the manuscript shortly, but sets it aside for some three months. Susan is a worrier. In addition to household chores and looking after the children, she spends time in worry, not always certain what it is that keeps crossing her mind although Arnold, her husband, is often in those plaguing thoughts.
Nonetheless, at last she picks up Edward's manuscript titled Nocturnal Animals, and soon finds herself totally engrossed in the story of Tony Hastings. Married to Laura with one daughter, Helen, "He was a mathematics professor who took pride in reliability and good sense." They were traveling by car in northern Pennsylvania on their way to their summer cottage in Maine. On a lark they decide to drive all night rather than stopping to rest. Tony "was liberated by the irresponsibility of not having to hunt for a place to stay...."
That feeling of freedom was short lived as the Hastings family suddenly and irrevocably loses every shred of the safety and serenity they once enjoyed. At the same time as Susan continues her reading of Edward's manuscript she is forced to face the truth about herself, a truth she does not like at all.
So perfectly written, so imaginatively conceived Tony & Susan will stay with you long after reading the last page.
- Gail Cooke

The Million Dollar Shot is about a boy named Eddie. He lives with his mom in a poor trailer park, but one day Eddie sends a poem into a contest hoping to win. One day he gets selected to shoot for 1 million dollars in New York City. He did shoot it and he got 1 million dollars! The ending is very good, but I won't tell you what it was... you'll have to find out yourself. This book is quite funny and entertaining. This book would've gotten 5 stars but it wasn't very long, if it was longer it would've been a spectacular book! No matter what, this book has got to be read!!

Lean on Pete: A Novel (P.S.) Review

Lean on Pete: A Novel (P.S.)

Fifteen year old Charlie Thompson lives with his unreliable single father who is unable to stay any place for long. Charlie has no friends as he moves around so frequently, and when they move to Portland, Oregon, before the start of the year at his new school he often finds himself on his own for days at a times, having to fend for himself. He manages to get a job working with horses at Delta Park, that's where he meets Lean on Pete, a four year old racehorse to whom he becomes particularity attached, and who will become the cause of his sudden departure from Portland and the beginning of an unenviable mission to find a place for himself in the world, somewhere he can call home.
Lean on Pete is a touching tale of a young boy who wants nothing more than to be able to finish school, join the school football team, and have a secure family home. Charlie tells his own tale in his own no-nonsense fashion as he tries to find just that. The result is an appealing and heart warming read, filled with a cast of mist-fits, the good natured, and the not to be trusted. I thoroughly enjoyed Lean on Pete.

CRUDDY: An Illustrated Novel Review

CRUDDY: An Illustrated Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had never heard of Lynda Barry before getting a tip about this book from another Amazon reader. For some reason I was expecting something along the lines of Phoebe Gloeckner's "Diary of a Teenage Girl"...graphic novel about girl coming of age in the 70's, etc.
But this is no memoir--at least, I hope not! It isn't really even a graphic novel in the traditional sense; Barry's crude paintings (done with charcoal? paint? hard to tell) interspersed throughout the narrative evoke the dark and ugly mood of the book perfectly, but they're miles away from comic-book realism.
This is a wildly-imaginative, horrifying book about Roberta Rohbeson, the story itself made even more surreal by the copious amounts of drugs and alcohol she as the narrator consumes, both as an 11 and 16 year old.
Roberta is tormented and abused at the hands of her nomadic father, who takes her on a roadtrip littered with corpses and who calls her Clyde and introduces her as a mute mongoloid. This is a girl who considers herself so ugly as a result of his violence, she becomes uncomfortable when people even glance her way. She's pitiable in the most obvious sense, but she's also smart and tough--and carries a knife named "Little Debbie" to protect her from the evil she (rightly) expects to encounter at every turn.
There's shenanigans and drug-and-alcohol induced exploits, of course, which drew comparisons to "Fear and Loathing" on the jacket cover, if I remember correctly. But it's not a one-trick pony, as Barry's character development skills are stunning. There's Roberta herself, her dim-witted and hysterical sidekick Vicky Talluso, the Father (referred to only as such), an erstwhile druggie hookup named Turtle, the flabby abusive hillbilly bartender Pammy, and many more. I can't make this stuff up, but Lynda Barry can.
Read it!!! Read it in the dark before you fall asleep. Read it when you're feeling sad. Read it in the most incongruous of settings--in the park, at the beach, on a sunny day. Despite its ugliness, it will make you smile.

The RV Book Review

The RV Book

Author Polk knows his stuff, no question about that. What irks me is that instead of explaning topics in the book, which is why I bought it, he refers us to his web site to buy one of his videos. Hey Mark, I already paid for the book, tell me in the book!
Another aggravating example, in the section on RV insurance he "recommends" a certain insurer in a sidebar, and then, lo and behold, on the very next page that insurer has a full page advertisement telling us how great Mark is!
I will not buy another book from this overly commercial author. If I want advertisements I'll buy a magazine.

The Pastoral Clinic: Addiction and Dispossession along the Rio Grande Review

The Pastoral Clinic: Addiction and Dispossession along the Rio Grande
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author reports on, and reflects upon, the anthropological research that she conducted in the region where she herself grew up: the Española Valley in Northern New Mexico. It is a region that few outsiders have taken the trouble to understand, while insiders (who generally feel beleaguered) are usually not eager to disclose to Anglos like me what their lives are like.
Dr. Garcia displays an all-too-rare insistence on questioning nearly everything. She thinks for herself in a refreshing and provocative way. In the process, she humbly yet methodically undermines conventional wisdom about the nature of addiction and the treatment of addicts.
In the past few years, I've seen enough of northern New Mexico to realize that alongside its grandeur and hospitality is a troubled and despairing aspect. Yet until now I had little idea of the depth, pervasiveness, and complexity of its problems. This book exposes them while providing a wide-ranging context. The author's systemic perspective encompasses geography, history, government social services, and more. As such, the book is appropriately disturbing on many levels. At the same time, it also bears poignant witness to human decency and loyalty and compassion under trying circumstances.
The scholarly stuff (such as literature reviews and methodological reflections), which is important to experts, is confined largely to the first few pages of each chapter. The rest of it reads much like an article in The New Yorker: straight-talking, compelling writing that is accessible also to non-experts.
This book gave me much more of an insider's view of (one slice of) Hispano life in the Española Valley than I imagined I'd ever be privileged to know. It has opened my eyes, and for that I'm grateful.

The Pastoral Clinic takes us on a penetrating journey into an iconic Western landscape--northern New Mexico's Española Valley, home to the highest rate of heroin addiction and fatal overdoses in the United States. In a luminous narrative, Angela Garcia chronicles the lives of several Hispano addicts, introducing us to the intimate, physical, and institutional dependencies in which they are entangled. We discover how history pervades this region that has endured centuries of material and cultural dispossession, and we come to see its heroin problem as a contemporary expression of these conditions, as well as a manifestation of the human desire to be released from them. Lyrically evoking the Española Valley and its residents through conversations, encounters, and recollections, The Pastoral Clinic is at once a devastating portrait of addiction, a rich ethnography of place, and an eloquent call for a new ethics of care.

black forest cake
chocolate chip cookie
apple pie
pina coloda
strawberry daquari
chocolate mousse
coffee cake
mint chocolate chip
vanilla bean icecream
she might have used one or two of those but really it doesnt take much imagination to think of different kind of food they can smother on there lips.

Sailing Big on a Small Sailboat Review

Sailing Big on a Small Sailboat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While the subject matter is excellent, the authours opinion is too prevalent.
JD Cardwell considers all sailboats under 22' as "not really cruisers". There are many on the water that would disagree. While a bigger trailerable may be more comfortable, it's also harder to tow, and more expensive.
The authour needlessly runs the risk of pushing the dream beyond the scope of those with limited resources.
This book may be considered valuable by those with or considering boats between 22 to 26 feet, but probably not to others.
Lastly, the authour obviously places more importance on creature comfort than seaworthiness, O.K. for the marina crowd, but offensive to the true cruising sailor.

Clicker Training: Colt Starting the Natural Horse Review

Clicker Training: Colt Starting the Natural Horse
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Perhaps it is unusual to be thrilled about a book at the age of 80, but this book which combines Positive Reinforcement [clicker] & Negative [Natural Horsemanship] Reinforcement is the most up to date book of its kind for horses. It is filled with great one liners and specific step by steps: "how to do it". And the steps are in order. I thought I was inventing this but she does it better than I do. I train my horses from scratch and ride into the high back-counry alone. You have to trust each other up there.
Every thing I could find in the book works and makes the relationship better at the same time.
She defines dominance [in the round pen chapter] and I use something from Rashid I use called Accepted Horse Leader: Those are the same terms only because of the way she does it. Being dominate in a forceful way is not there, but what I call being an Accepted Leader is there. She explains why being safe is important and how to achieve that safety for both of you in the best way possible for both of you.
The stories are all so meaningful and encouraging, stories that come only from a long and very creative experience.
If you have been doing this work on your own, you don't have to be alone anymore. This is a great book.
She also fades out the clicker: A "how to" that is often neglected.
The only objection I have is there is no Index. Dr. Phil didn't have one in his 1st book either so she is in good company. Drat: No index.
Don't forget to read the Closing on p 306.
Thrilling, Yes, Thrilling,
David

Better Than Bombproof is an excellent addition to any hobby rider library because it provides solutions to the issues that all of us encounter as horseowners. The book opens with a discussion of proper equipment and groundwork to prepare the horse to advance to more complex demands. By addressing the psychology of the horse and classic principles of dressage, the author lays a progressive foundation. The material is laid out logically and written very clearly. The author uses pictures and diagrams which are very helpful. I would recommend this book to any hobby rider.
