The Paris Wife: A Novel Review

The Paris Wife: A Novel

At the end of Ernest Hemingway's memoir, A Moveable Feast , he writes of his first wife, Hadley Richardson, "I wish I had died before I loved anyone but her." After their divorce, Hemingway marries three more times, each one prompt to follow, like serial wives. This is the story of the woman that loved him before he was famous.
Paula McLain researched their biographies, letters, and Hemingway's novels, culling the material to imagine a story of their charmed and battered marriage in Paris, from 1921-1926. The tortured life and tragically foreshadowed suicide of Ernest Hemingway is public knowledge, as was his legendary womanizing. McLain's novel dodges the palaver, blending the facts that are known together with credible inference, creating a plausible, informed depiction of Hemingway and Hadley's marriage--the quotidian, the famed, the halcyon, the harsh.
The author writes from Hadley's point of view, inviting the reader inside their most tender and demolishing moments. A few choice sections belong to Hemingway's perspective, urgent and telling. The narrative deftly folds in their histories--the years before they met--artfully revealing early and private woes, which ripple and sometimes hiss beneath the ardor. We get the back stories without muddled exposition; by the time it arrives at the failure of their union, readers have acquired a fluency of Hadley's nature and Hemingway's core.
Hadley sustained several painful childhood experiences that eerily parallel Hemingway's, and was a recluse and "spinster" at twenty-eight, when she met and was courted by the twenty-one-year-old Hemingway. He was a struggling, ambitious writer, home after the shock and agonies of the Great War, where he endured trauma and its aftereffects, described today as PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). He couldn't sleep without a light. His mother was an insufferable controller, and he didn't want to marry a woman like that.
The pliable and less progressive Hadley was a sound match for the needy, talented, and egocentric Ernest. He required a woman who would unshakably support his career. Hadley was a generous lover and devoted supporter who sacrificed her personal ambitions for Ernest. She was also playful and warm and smart, but not savvy and edgy like the emerging modern women of the 1920's.

In prose that reflects the style of the era, McLain illustrates a glittering world of élan expatriates and literati. Hadley and Ernest (and their baby, Bumby) lived in the (then) modest Latin Quarter, and soon became a vibrant part of the Left Bank artists, such as Gertrude Stein, Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, James Joyce, Ford Maddox Ford, Jean Rhys, and many others. Open marriage, and mistresses living in the same house with wives, were not unheard of in this set.
Blithe talk, bottomless glasses of whiskey, and bottle after bottle of wine was the norm in their active social lives. In the mornings, the hair of the dog was the cure for the night on the town. Jaunts to Pamplona to see the bullfights were illustrated by McClain in all their gory splendor.
During this time, Hemingway wrote copiously and tirelessly, jealous of some of his peers who were already established. The germination and completion of The Sun Also Rises is covered, as well as his ruthless parody of Sherwood Anderson's work, The TORRENTS OF SPRING. Hadley loved him utterly, propped him up buoyantly, and assured him of his inevitable success. Eventually, Ernest acquired more expansive needs, and Hadley needed less, but got more than she bargained for. McClain limns their marriage as more than just a cautionary tale.
"To keep you from thinking, there was liquor, an ocean's worth at least, all the usual vices and plenty of rope to hang yourself with. But some of us, a very few in the end, bet on marriage against the odds."
This isn't standard "chick-lit" fare, nor is it cloying. I recommend this to anyone interested in the psyche of Hemingway, his first marriage, and his genesis as one of the greatest American authors of our time--from a wife's perspective.

When I was nine, I read this book. At age 40, I read the same copy to my children, ages ten and eight. As much as I enjoyed reading it the first time, reading it out loud was a much richer experience.
The writing flows naturally, and encourages a great variation in expression. The adventure truly comes out in the reader's voice. I am an actor, but I felt that this story would bring out the actor in anybody.
The story was so exciting and surprising that long reading sessions never dragged. At several points, my children threw themselves down on the floor and yelled, "Oh my gosh!"
This experience brought it all together for me, if I may speak personally: books, performing, involvement with my children, a classic story that I relished as a child myself. Those evenings added up to the happiest time of my life.
The plot concerns a boy who runs away during the California gold rush--with his butler!--to try to get his family out of debt. The adventures along the way are episodic, and each episode is an amazing and believable story in itself. Every step in the journey is given full attention: the voyage from Boston to San Francisco, the trip to the gold fields, the experiences among the miners. There are plenty of colorful characters, and plenty of opportunities for the two main characters to grow. There are also several threads that run through the whole story, maintaining suspense. Their resolution is unpredictable and satisfying.
There was very little in the book that could make a parent squirm, and very little that sounded out of date. But there were three moments that made me pause: 1) There is a fist fight, though it is handled in a light-hearted way. 2) There is a reference to corporal punishment when an adult threatens to "take a hairbrush" to a child. 3) There is an expression used once that might be innocent for all I know, but sure doesn't sound that way: "That's mighty white of you."
Minor reservations, I hope you'll agree. So plunge in and have an experience you and your listeners will never forget.

VengeanceBecomes the UltimateJustice for Child Molesters! If one is already dying, the death penalty has no meaning! Jack Blaine and his best buddy, Joe, spend hours a week at a local pizza place after discussing their own failing mortality at weekly support group meetings. Frustrated by a system that allows child molesters to live freely amongst law-abiding citizens with seemingly little or no remorse, they talk endlessly about what could be done. When they decide to take justice into their own hands and to do something more than just complain though, they begin treading at the edge of the law and going beyond. With a little bit of divine intervention, they bring personal justice to families and children who have had their lives destroyed by sex offenders who continue to live freely, able to do unconscionable things over and over again. As they continue on their mission, the number of murders begins to attract the attention of the local police and ultimately the FBI. Now it's simply a matter of time before they must stop dispensing vigilante justice--or else be caught. The Eleventh Commandment is an unforgettable story of what happens when everyday citizens take the law into their own hands.

God in Concord (A Homer Kelly Mystery) Review

God in Concord (A Homer Kelly Mystery)
Average Reviews:

Jane Langton's Homer Kelly is one part absent-minded professor, one part Doctor Who (sans time travel) and one part...well, Homer Kelly. Suffering from JFS (Jessica Fletcher Syndrome), mystery and death seem to "sniff out" Homer, rather than the other way around.
The story is not just merely about scenic suburban life and the petty trifles of its inhabitants. That provides the narrative façade for an astute commentary regarding the politics of development/city planning, environmentalism and the dangers/benefits of nostalgia.
Langton's characters are vividly multi-dimensional, torn in their allegiances by both heart and mind. The author asks the reader not to pass immediate judgment, suggesting that the potential for villainy resides within us as well, under the right set of circumstances.
I think this is one of Langton's better books in the series. Highly recommended for Thoreau buffs and those readers familiar with Boston/Concord, Massachusetts.

Collective Marks Review

Collective Marks

this book was a surprise to me- came up as an Amazon Rec'd book, so since I AM a horse lover, had to get it. Once I opened it, I can hardly put it down. Ms Feldman has a terrific feeling for the horse, as well as human nature, and the often complicated relationships between the two.
She is a gifted writer, with excellent use of the language and the book flows very well. She has a deep knowledge of her subjects- which makes things very believable and enjoyable. Even though its a tough topic, as so much of growing up is hard to articulate, she has done an outstanding job. I will look for more books by her!

Over the years, social worker Annie Trowbridge has worked with foster homes, schools, and other community resources to help Michael Ross, just turned eighteen, become a productive citizen, but with only partial success.

Michael has only one consistent attribute—a fascination with horses. Annie sees in this interest a possible solution to his poor work history and repeated brushes with the law, and when she is called by the police to say that he is in trouble again, she makes one last effort to find him work with a horse trainer, Erik Sarmento, on an isolated horse farm.

The ensuing struggle between the volatile, defensive Michael and the hard, unsympathetic trainer is the background of the novel and the means by which Michael learns that he is dealing with both a gifted trainer and a potentially dangerous man.
A delinquent 18-year-old with a passion for horses learns valuable lessons from an unsympathetic horse trainer.Although the story deals with a rare form of competitive horse training—dressage—the author's vivid descriptions successfully integrate the concept into the narrative. In horse training terms, "collective marks" are the judges' scores for a dressage horse and its rider. Feldman extends the metaphor throughout the story, suggesting that collective marks only accrue when an effective balance of power is struck between the student and teacher. A carefully plotted coming-of-age story about the bounds of authority. -Kirkus Discoveries

My Life As A Truck Driver The First Two Years Review

My Life As A Truck Driver The First Two Years

I relate to the author's story as I was a truck driver for 5 years, and I know that the road offers a story to tell for anyone who has lived that life. Sadly, this author just wasn't the one to tell it. This book was obviously self-published with no editoral support, because the grammatical and spelling errors are frequent and the storytelling skill is minimal at best. I truly hate to give a bad review, but I hope it will inspire the author to learn a little about the craft of writing and seek out editorial support before he tries this again.

I disagree with the other reveiwer. I think this was a wonderful book. Don't let that other person fool you MKA fans! This is a terrific book. This was a funny book and it was extremely hilarius when Ashly(she is called Chloe in the book. Mary-Kate is called Riley) 'faces off' with Travis and follows him into the boy's bathroom on accident! It was so discriptive I could see the whole scene in my head and burst out laughing. And when it talks about Cloe's 'brain freeze', I understand that sort of thing. Sometimes when I drink or eat something super cold, My head sortof goes numb for a few minets. Anyhow, time to wrap this up. Buy this book MKA fans! Understanding the Ancient Secrets of the Horse's Mind Review

Understanding the Ancient Secrets of the Horse's Mind
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having heard Dr. Miller speak about imprinting a foal, I've been a big fan of his work. He's done a lot in the field of horsemanship, helping to educate horse owners. His work is aimed at the amateur horse owner, someone who might not have a background in horses, or who only has one or two in their care. With that said, do I agree with everything he says? No, I do not. However, I did find this book to be a thought provoking collection of essays.
The "ancient secrets" to which Dr. Miller refers is simply the natural way in which a horse is hardwired. Those who work around horses know that they are prey creatures. Their instincts tell them to flee from danger, and barring that, fight to get free. Therefore, many of things that owners and trainers do to them run counter to that instinct. Dr. Miller's book helps the owner and/or trainer to understand a bit more the details in a horse's mind, and understand why a horse may be performing a certain action.
From the title of this book it sounds like it might be the "be-all-end-all" to horsemanship tomes. Certainly "Understanding the Ancient Secrets of the Horse's Mind" sounds weighty and important. I'm not saying this book isn't important, but the book cannot, especially in such a slim volume, be the complete handbook to getting inside a horse's psyche. No, this is a title to read, to ponder, and to learn from, and then use as a way to branch out into other books on equine psychology.
With that said, however, I do feel that this book is a worthwhile addition to any horseman's library, and certainly should be on the "must read" list of any serious horse owner.

I am not sure how I came about this book. I believe I requested one book to review and somehow was given this one and another. Considering it was offered to me I felt compelled to read it and write a review.
I found Mr. Hall's debut to be quite interesting, but a slow story that never landed. While reading it I kept thinking something is going to happen but it never did. I am not sure what the authors attempt was. Maybe a memoir was not the way to go, possibly fiction?
I guess I expected something like this show on HBO called "Prisoner Cell Block H" gritty raw and ACTION PACKED. Memoir had no luster it lacked history and reasoning. I hope the authors next attempt "Smoking Cigarettes" has a much better story line.

I agree with David Morrell that this is one heck of a good idea for a novel! In a nutshell, it's a "James Bond" type tale with a climax reminiscent of "The Matrix's" flair for bending reality and it's really hard to put the book down after about page 20. With all the action scenes, running gun battles and explosions this story has all the makings for an action packed, big-screen movie. Before you start reading this one, make sure you have a large bucket of popcorn and a large drink at hand.
