Guide To Writing & Publishing Science Fiction Fantasy Horror Review

Guide To Writing and Publishing Science Fiction Fantasy Horror
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Now here is a different sort of writing guide! I loved it! First, it zeroes in specifically on the genres I'd like to write about, Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror, rather than just being for anyone who wants to write just anything.
Secondly, it does not treat the would-be writer of such genres as a "newbie." This thoughtful and well organized guide assumes you already have a grasp of these basic things. Rather, the Guide To Writing & Publishing Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror by Rob Shelsky gave me exactly what I needed.
It dwells specifically on how to write in the above three speculative genres. As the Guide says, they all have very much in common, and so those common elements allow the writer to write any of the three (using this book as a guide, of course). It also delineates the differences in each genre, the added elements required for horror versus fantasy, versus science fiction, for instance. The book gives five easy steps to getting published and then each chapter goes into depth on how to do all these things. For example, I had no idea that the first two lines of a book were really so critical, could make or break somebody wanting to buy it! Neither did I realize what ingredient is absolutely essential to horror (read the book to find that one out). Nor did I realize the common pitfalls of writing fantasy, the mistakes many (even accomplished authors)make, if they don't do some research and watch out for certain things!
What's more, the Guide To Writing & Publishing Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror details such things as how to promote cheaply as an independent author (free, do-it-yourself book trailers, for example), how to respond to publishers, how to create settings for stories, develop characters, develop plots, etc. Just check out the table of contents of this book. It shows you just how in-depth the contents are with regard to writing in these three speculative genres.
A Guide To Writing & Publishing Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror is just chock full of great advice, straightforward information, and a cut-to-the-chase approach to not only writing in these genres, but getting published in them, as well. I give Rob Shelsky's Guide To Writing & Publishing Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror the full five stars, because it certainly has helped me to get moving in my writing. My recommendation? Buy the book! It really does help--a lot!

Melody (Logan) Review

While Melody wasn't as good as the Casteel, Cutler, and Dollanganger series, it was still a good read, and a decent series. Melody has a lot of enemies, and secrets to contend with, but she shows to be a fine young lady with a good backbone, and was overall a good heroine in face of what she had to deal with.
This is the last series that Mr. Neiderman, the ghostwriter for VCA, put any real effort into. If you're interested in reading V.C. Andrews, only buy the Logan series or any of the series that came before it.

I am thinking about modeling the B&O and this book provides great photos and a history of the railroad which is truly inspiring. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the B&O.

As Americas first common-carrier railroad--a railroad mandated to operate for the public and for commerce--the Baltimore & Ohio set the stage for North American railway development. And as such, the railroad racked up a remarkable list of firsts--first to offer scheduled passenger service, first to experiment with steam power, and the first air-conditioned passenger cars, lightweight streamliners, high-speed passenger diesels, and "piggyback" freight services--to name just a few. In this expanded hardcover reissue of the popular 2000 release, authors Kirk Reynolds and Dave Oroszi explore these accomplishments, and with them a significant chapter in American railway history. With an all-new collection of more than 150 photos and illustrations, the book gives a colorful account of the evolution of one of the nations most enduring railroad icons, through good times and bad. Reynolds and Oroszi follow the B&O from its infancy as a horse-powered railway in the first half of the nineteenth century to its 1987 amalgamation into the vast CSX Transportation network. The book tells how the B&O, handicapped by its rugged route from the East Coast to the Midwest nonetheless proved second to none in serving its customers--whether on star passenger lines like the Capitol Limited and National Limited or on a freight network that included such notable offerings as "Sentinel Service" and the "Timesaver" freights. The railroads story, as it unfolds in these pages, makes for an evocative journey through 160 years of railroad history.

This is an interesting new take on the use of the Internet for evil -
pay-per-view murder. A brilliant and rich entrepreneur calling himself
Screenshot sets up assassinations using remote-controlled weapons,
and his targets are people we'd all like to see dead, like terrorists
and skinheads. He then charges admission to see it happen, live on
your computer. The only way to track him through the veil of Internet
anonymity are the theories of a crazy scientist, and the only people
who believe him are a disgruntled FBI computer geek and an
investigative reporter.
These two team with the scientist, and are soon targets of Screenshot
and wanted by the FBI as suspects themselves. The technology sounds
plausible, and the weapons are really weird, including a liquid taser
called the Pediphryer, used on, you guessed it, a pedophile. The story
moves rapidly, especially when the good guys become the targets,
running from the FBI while trying to avoid Screenshot's new weapon
aimed at them. And the ending is a table-turner.
I'd recommend it, especially if you like techno-thrillers.

Ghost Boy Review

Ghost Boy, by Iain Lawrence, is the story of an albino boy named Harold. An albino lacks coloring matter in the skin, hair, and eyes, and so is very white in appearance. Harold lives as an outcast for the first part of his life, until he runs away to the circus. He is adopted by Princess Minikin and Fossil Man. For the first time, he begins to feel accepted by others. He meets another albino, the Cannibal King. He falls in love with Flip. Harold even teaches the elephants in the show to play baseball. But Harold finds that even here, there are the "freaks" and the others that are considered normal, and he is confused as to which group he belongs.Ghost Boy is an unforgettable book that entertained as well as captured my attention. I give it five stars and highly recommend it. It was an interesting book that held many emotions, including sadness, happiness, mysteriousness, suspense, humor, and anger. Ghost Boy helped me to understand the struggles and pain of those who feel they are different

The Hounds and the Fury: A Novel Review

The Hounds and the Fury: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the fifth entry of the Outfoxed series, Sister Jane Arnold and her friends ride out with their hounds while dealing with the ramifications of the disasterous culmination of the Hunt Ball as detailed in the previous book of that name. Crawford Howard has withdrawn his financial support from the Jefferson Hunt, and another affluent member, Dr. Jason Woods, can't seem to decide whether to follow. The mystery involving possible financial wrong-doing at a local factory takes a while to develop and then takes a back seat to the foxhunts and all the work that makes them possible, but the details are fascinating and, of course, the observations of all the animals are worth the read by themselves.
If you follow both the Mrs. Murphy and Sister Jane series of mystery novels written by Ms. Brown, you may have noticed that what one can only assume are the author's personal opinions about everything from the quality of various makes of automobiles to the advisability of purchasing various brands of boots have been creeping into the stories. That's fine, as long as those details don't overwhelm the story line, and in the last two Mrs. Murphy mysteries, I felt that they had -- I don't remember "who dunnit" but I do recall a several-page exploration of automotive engine technology, which, while mildly interesting, clearly distracted from the story rather than enhanced it. In this book, however, politics are mostly balanced out by event development, although the events may be more about the Hunt than the mystery itself.
I found myself a bit puzzled by a lack of leading articles in dialogue -- statements that would normally begin with "a," "an" or "the" had those words left off. It might ring true for someone from the region, but I couldn't "hear" it and found it a bit disrupting. The dialogue between close friends sometimes "skipped around" a bit, too -- while one can easily see how folks that know one another well would talk in shorthand like that, I don't know these people well enough to follow their conversation all the time.
However, the comments from the animals are spot on, and my own dogs listened intently while I read some of the hunting sequences to them (although, being Poodles, they opined that the foxhunt sounded like rather a lot of work, and why not just head straight to the tailgate potluck?)
A foxhunter herself, Ms. Brown is obviously using these books to present her case in favor of the sport, and I find her arguments to be compelling ones. Actually, I'd be in favor of scrapping the "mystery" element to the books completely, just to read about the traditions and day-to-day activities of the foxhunters! Sure makes me wish I'd kept up those riding lessons waybackwhen....
Cons: Not so much of a mystery, really
Pros: Engaging characters -- especially the animals -- and fascinating exploration of foxhunting.

Jan Dawson provides great information on all aspects of a riding program. The sections on lesson plans, dealing with accidents and lawsuits, and safe school horses will be useful for both instructor and clientele in evaluating their current situation.

Safe riding is correct riding. That's Jan Dawson's motto, and it's the philosophy behind her book, Teaching Safe Horsemanship. Dawson's goal is to provide both English and Western riding instructors with an effective and safe teaching program. She explains how to assess a horse's particular characteristics in order to weed out potentially dangerous animals. She also offers guidelines for assessing instructors and students, including what makes a good instructor and what attitudes can get in the way of learning proper horsemanship. Since 80 percent of all accidents involve falls due to loss of balance, Dawson identifies the techniques that ensure that a horse and rider are in proper balance. Finally, since she is a lawyer as well as a riding instructor, Dawson includes a chapter on securing useful liability forms, what insurance coverage does and does not do, and how to handle accidents and lawsuits. Dawson and her husband teach the only equine law course taught at a law school in the United States.

Super Stock Rookie (Motor Novels) Review

Super Stock Rookie (Motor Novels)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
SUPER STOCK ROOKIE is another fast-paced racing story by Will Weaver. This is the second in his MOTOR NOVEL series and is sure to grab the attention of reluctant teen readers - even if they aren't particularly racing fans.
Trace Bonham has been racing Street Stock for years on small town tracks throughout the northern Midwest. Now, it's possible that he might get a chance to race a new, top-of-the-line Super Stock car. All he has to do is attend a tryout sponsored by a group called Team Blu and hope for the best.
Joining Trace are some of his friends from his hometown track at Headwaters Speedway. Mel runs the track with her dad. Patrick sings the national anthem before races, does grunt work around the track, and wishes he could be a driver someday. There are also other racing teams that have watched Trace grow into the racer he is today. All of them wish him the best at the tryout, but if he makes it, will his success change these longtime relationships?
Team Blu offers Trace the best of everything - a great new car, topnotch mechanics and pit crew, and a super trailer complete with his own quality sleeping quarters. He just has to drive fast, look great, and promote their product. Seems pretty simple, but ...
I'm not a racing fan at all, but I found myself caught up in the action from the very first page. Weaver's first MOTOR NOVEL, titled SATURDAY NIGHT DIRT, was also a page-turner, so I'm definitely looking forward to whatever follows next.

To rephrase Ratty's famous comment to Mole in "The Wind in the Willows": There is nothing- absolutely nothing- half so much worth doing as simply messing about in an RV.
By even the most charitable of definitions, I am not what anyone would call "handy" when it comes to fixing things about our sticks-and-bricks house. I am not good at it and I hate taking the time for even the most basic of repairs.
Having said that, I also note that I love puttering around our 5th wheel and could happily spend hours at a time on RV related projects! I guess that's why I think the 10 Minute Tech books are so terrific. More than 600 practical and money-saving ideas in each of the three volumes . . . clever, practical solutions to both everyday challenges and to obscure situations the average RVer will never come across. Each idea presents a practical, real-life solution. Each has been developed by an RVer. The projects are presented in language which is brief, understandable and to the point . . . and the illustrations do a great job of clearing up any questions left unanswered by the text.
The books are conveniently divided into sections on Livability, Safety, Appliances, Maintenance, Automotive, In Camp, Systems, Storage, Towing, Accessories, Sanitation, Doors-Hatches-Handles, Cleaning-Protecting, and Tools. Only a brief perusal is needed to start the creative juices flowing - to send the reader, tool box in hand, off on another project. A fun read when you are nowhere near an RV. An indispensable reference when you are on the road.

An RV isn't a home until those changes, upgrades, and small-scale fixes have been made that put a personal stamp on it. 10-Minute Tech, Volume 2 shows that this process need not be fraught with difficulty or drama. Aimed at both the RV novice and the seasoned pro, the information here is drawn from Trailer Life and MotorHome magazines' "Quick Tips" self-help column, written by and for RVers and based on actual experience. The book contains little-known tips that RVers shouldn't live without and hundreds of illustrations and line drawings to make changes easy. Arranged in a straightforward reference format for easy access to particular problems, 10-Minute Tech provides the no-nonsense advice readers have come to expect from this series.

I was interested in the book for my elementary-aged boy who is just learning to show--thank goodness we checked it out from the library first. This book has a lot of good basic information on horse shows and how to participate. While the information presented is generally gender-neutral, the book as a whole is not. The pictures almost all feature girls, the Show Story vignettes are all about girls, even the type and background colors struck my son as "girlie". This would probably be an interesting and useful book to most young equestrians--I wish they'd presented the information in a way that appealed to girls AND boys.

This was a good book. Poor Hayley - such rotten luck. You have to admire her though as she works hard to get control of her life. Though she is frustrating in her stubbornness at times. Jake is a good solid character that is a good match to her. Their relationship is sweet, though a little slow and stalled at times, it rounds out nicely. Jake's family make for good side characters once you warm up to them. Altogether, a fun book with nicely placed action.

I Know My First Name Is Steven Review

I Know My First Name Is Steven
Average Reviews:

I saw this movie as a teenager and it haunts me to this day. Steven's pain, suffering and 7 yr ordeal is never far from my thoughts when the mention of a child molestation or child abduction is on the news. To live through this must have taken more than just self preservation techniques, but then we are all stronger than we think when we live through something horrible.
I bought this book because I had seen the movie and wanted to get a better idea of what Steven had to endure at the hands of a complete waste of space - Kenneth Parnell. Well I got a good idea just 2 chapters into this book. It certainly gives us readers a view of life from Steven's point of view, which is good because most books dont give the victims point of view, espiecally a child's.
However, Im at the end of the book and the writer sees fit to put the section on Cary Stayner being the yosemite killer, but didnt see fit to put how Mr Parnell has recently been in the news for trying to buy a little boy in Berkley Ca as late as 2003, but was referred to as "harmless" because he was in a wheel chair! Mr Parnell had previous convictions of child rape and kidnapping. To this day he is a free man, whether in a wheel chair or not he and others like him are a threat to society.
Child Predators are a threat to all of our children because people are too worried about being Politically Correct, instead of doing what is right; ie., voting, questioning people who are around children, confronting someone when we are suspicious of their actions, making sure our children are in a safe environment with safe adults, etc.
This book may not have been done properly and maybe the writer didnt do it perfectly, but at least he was and is an advocate for children and at least he was willing to put his name on something and put it out there for people to read. Which is more than I can say for alot of people, they lack backbone when it comes to doing what is right.
So read the book if you want to get a more defined idea about what Steven Stayner had to live through, as well as his family, etc. It's like the movie, but more defined and detailed

Best Friends: The True Story of the World's Most Beloved Animal Sanctuary

I bought this book when I visited Best Friends about 2 years ago but only just read it. Why the delay? I was expecting lots of negative stories - people abusing animals, etc. When I finally picked the book up to read I zipped through it quickly amazed at the powerfully positive messages. Yes, there are stories of the bad things that humans do to animals but these are used to highlight the good things that humans can do if they make the choice to care.
Almost more than the animal stories are those of the people who made Best Friends real. The compassionate people who saw a need and, out of their own pockets, decided to make a difference. Although the organization became (and is) public it began as a labor of love.
If you love animals you will find this book one of hope and passion. It made me wish I could pack up and move to Kanab, UT to become a full-time volunteer!
Read the book and, if you haven't already, visit the sactuary itself. It's truly a testament to what love can do.
