Chicken Coops: 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock Review

Chicken Coops: 45 Building Plans for Housing Your Flock
Average Reviews:

I'm not usually so critical, but I was utterly disappointed in this book. The title is misleading. The '45 plans' mentioned in the title were not plans at all. They were at best 'general arrangements'. While overall dimensions were given, most 'plans' barely mention materials of construction and certainly didn't include an actual bill of material.
Some of the illustrations were little more than crude, badly proportioned hand sketches.
I guess I expected more from someone who felt they were qualified to write a book. I would have to guess that this is the authors first book. Apparently the publisher wasn't paying any attention during this project.
A synopsis of the book might read "throw some scrap material together and give it a cutsie name...I'll include it in my next book!!

The Fourth Stall is a great book, and I highly recommend it. Chris Rylander has an amazing sense of humor, and the Fourth Stall is one of the few books that has made me laugh out loud repeatedly. I definitely hope there are more books in this series! If you are looking for a fun and funny read, or you are buying for a reluctant reader, the Fourth Stall is a great choice!

Mrs. Pollifax Pursued (Mrs. Pollifax Mysteries) Review

Mrs. Pollifax Pursued (Mrs. Pollifax Mysteries)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had read a Mrs. Pollifax novel before and not enjoyed it at all. This is the first time i've tried one after reading two other Gilman novels, and i expected to like it. I do. It is a funny thing, however, that i do not enjoy it as much as her other, non-series novels. Somehow it is a little forced, a bit as thought she feels she really needs to write this to satisfy the readers who love Mrs. Pollifax. It is far less believable a story than "Thale's Folly" was, for instance, though the characters are, perhaps, less exotic than "Thale's". There is something about the set-up, some fashion in which Gilman is saying, "I know none of this is at all true to life, but here you are ~ you wanted it ~ hope you like it." Several of the characters ~ Kadi, Willie, Boozy Tim, Mrs. Pollifax herself ~ are nice, believable, real even; it must be the situation they find themselves in which displeases me. The plot relies on coincidence too much for its resolution, and does not carry the ring of truth a perect novel makes echo in my mind. Looking back onto it, i feel that all it is is some real charactes interacting on a cardboard plot; i was never drawnn in the way i want to be by any book i read. Nevertheless, a fun read; i will try another Mrs. Pollifax, to be sure ~ along with any non-Pollifax Gilmans i can find.

Maddie Inherits a Cowboy (Harlequin Super Romance) Review

Maddie Inherits a Cowboy (Harlequin Super Romance)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If Nevada rancher Ty Hopewell and New York anthropology professor Madeline Blaine were Facebook Friends, their relationship would undoubtedly be characterized as "It's Complicated."
Ty blames himself for the accidental death of his ranching partner Skip Blaine who is also Madeline's brother. Madeline believes Ty is either bleeding her inherited share of the ranch's profits or he is incompetent. To learn the truth, she travels to the isolated Nevada ranch where she encounters more than she bargained for. Even the near-arctic cold and the blizzards of Nevada's Cowboy Country in the winter can't tamp down the burgeoning flame between them.

Complicating it all, Madeline is embroiled in an investigation into the falsification of academic test data. How will she handle the investigation while attempting to determine how the ranch began to lose money shortly after her brother's death? We know the pieces of the puzzle will eventually fall into place. The question is: How?
Jeannie Watt's touching story of accidental death, guilt, suspicion, conspiracy at the highest levels of academia, and romance, mixed with ample portions of everyday ranch life off the grid (electricity by intermittent and unreliable generators) is a compelling story you wont want to miss.
Check out how Jeannie converts a relationship from "It's complicated" to a deep and abiding love story between two wounded individuals.

No heat. No bed. And a cow…hanging from the rafters? What kind of ranch is this? No wonder Madeline's brother only sent pictures of the stunning Nevada landscape. He couldn't very well have convinced his family he was happy in this godforsaken place. But the cold outside is more bearable than the frosty partner she's inherited along with half of the ranch. Ty Hopewell. Not exactly Mr. Social.Never mind. She has every right to be here. She may be a city girl, but Madeline Blaine has a PhD and she's not afraid to use it. Something about this place-and this cowboy-just doesn't feel right. And she's going to figure out what it is. And fix it. Fix him, too…if she can.--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

Cat To The Dogs: A Joe Grey Mystery Review

Joe Grey and Dulcie strike again. Murphy has written a real page-turner--I was up until 3 a.m. finishing it. Lots of suspense with the ongoing characters (will Harper find out about the cats or won't he?) and some new animal characters that add complications and humor. Murphy manages to make these cats that investigate (and talk) utterly believable.. Great setting, and good story. Not to be missed!

I received this book as a gift in 1966. It is beautifully illustrated with photographs of many champion Saddlebreds of the past as well as George Ford Morris paintings. Lance Phillips covers the basics of training a young horse in simple to understand language. This is one of my favorite books. When friends borrow it, I have a hard time getting it back. The Clue in the Old Album (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 24) Review

The Clue in the Old Album (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 24)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book ,The Clue in the Old Album, is a very intriguing book. When you read the book you never know what will happen next. The main characters are Nancy Drew and a young girl named Rose. Nancy is trying to find Rose's father,Romano, and a special doll that Rose's mother hinted before she died. One thing Mrs. Struthers, Rose's grandmother, never mentioned to Rose is that her father was a gypsy and a violinest. While you read the book many conflicts arise. One of the main conflicts is to find Romano and two gypsies,Nitaka and Zorus. Nitaka and Zorus cause a lot of problems throughout the book. They steal items and threaten Nancy. I enjoyed the book because of the suspense. I never can put the book down. One thing I didn't enjoy is Nancy is always in the right place at the right time. I love this book and I hope you do too.

The Best in Tent Camping: Northern California (Best Tent Camping) Review

The Best in Tent Camping: Northern California (Best Tent Camping)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are many, many campgrounds in California, and we spent several years selecting the targets of our camping trips based on friends' recommendations, or CA State or National Parks descriptions. Unfortunately, our criteria were not often what people were recommending a campsite for, and there are so many parks in CA that a comparative selection based on raw data is overwhelming. What we wanted was:
1. beauty
2. quiet and serenity
3. less popular sites (to stay away from the crowds)
4. car-camping or near car-camping (we have a toddler).
Bill Mai's guide enabled up to make some quick selections based on his descriptions and ratings. His campsites are a highly rated selection already (his criteria are pretty close to ours), the information is fairly good, he gives good input on the best season to go, and his descriptions are very accurate. We ended up going to several campsites he recommended last year and never were disappointed. This year we have plans for several others based on his input.
It is simply an easy way to choose good places to go without having to worry that the site will be less than what our expectations are for it.

Celebration: A Novel Review

Celebration: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a fan of Harry Crews since first reading "The Gypsy's Curse" about 25 years ago. His novels are populated by grotesques; and his story lines are often comic, sometimes bizarre. However, he writes with gritty realism. His characters are intensely credible, human and sympathetic. Some are even appealing. This is what I've come to appreciate about his writing.
"Celebration" is different. I don't mean that it's bad. It's just not what I'm looking for when I pick up a Harry Crews book. A beautiful young woman moves into a trailer park full of old people who have little else to do but wait to die. She works, rather obscurely and mystically, to open up these people to what she calls "the chance of ultimate possibility". (I must say, however, that some of her methods are entertaining.) Many of the characters and their conduct are rather surreal. I had a hard time understanding them, let alone relating to them. This novel, particulary its "surprise" ending, owes more to the horror-fantasy writing of Clive Barker than to the hardcore southern grit tradition that Crews usually represents so well.

Youth in Revolt: Now a major motion picture from Dimension Films starring Michael Cera (Random House Movie Tie-In Books) Review

Youth in Revolt: Now a major motion picture from Dimension Films starring Michael Cera (Random House Movie Tie-In Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the sake of being interesting, I will review this book in the style which it was written:
Day 1: Finally started reading this book. Many years ago, a friend suggested I read it. Ever since then, the title was always stuck in my head. When I would see it in print I would think, "You know. I really should pick that book up." Eventually I did pick it up, but it ended up in my overly large "to read" pile. Finally, something made me pick it up today. After 50 pages, it seems interesting.
Day 2: I read more of the book today. I'm having trouble getting into it based on the nature of how it is written. The entire book is written in the form of journal entries. Don't get me wrong, it's easy to read. Still, I find that the short entries lend themselves to reading only a few at a time. Still, over the course of the day I read 100 pages. Certainly an interesting book.
Day 3: I read 250 pages of the book today. I can't put it down. The short journal entries have gone from being a hindrance in reading to an aid in getting rapid snapshots of how the story unfolds. The narrative transpires in small doses which leave you wanting more. As soon as I put the book down I want to pick it up again and get another dose. I cannot remember the last time I was so engrossed in a book. It's uncanny.
Day 4: Today is the final day with the book. That sounds funny, but it's true. I wish it were 1000 pages long and I could get 4 more days out of it. No, make that 2000. For the first time in a long time, I am saddened to see a book coming to a close. I don't want it to end, I enjoy it that much. Normally, I look forward to the close of one story and the beginning of a new one. Not this time. I want this story to go on forever (or a reasonable length of time). It's that enjoyable.
Day 5: I am sitting here the day after, thinking about the book. The ending was good enough, not Earth shattering. Nothing amazing could have happened to make everything right in the world again. I honestly didn't expect a lot from the ending and I would have been disappointed if he had tried to do make everything perfect. The bulk of the story ties up, which prevents it from merely hanging. Still, some questions remain, like: How did Paul know?
I wish I could pick it up and read it again. But it's too early for that. Being honest, the book wasn't philosophically deep enough for me to learn anything new if I were to reread it immediately. Still, the book was really good. Sitting down with it every day was a pleasure.
If every book were this good, I would read constantly. As it is, I read every day, but not like this. I read this book while brushing my teeth or making coffee. I'll miss this book. It was a great ride which I am sad to see end.
As a final note, I think those who give the book bad ratings are not able to stray from their usual genre of reading and accept this book for what it is. It is a well written and silly narrative about 14-year-old kids that is not really based in reality, but as a 14-year-old might see it. The fact that the story is interpreted through the voice of one of these children is lost on the people who disparage the book. Don't be swayed from reading this, as it harkens back to the silliness inherent in youth which can be appreciated at any age.
Phenomenal entertainment value. Highly recommended.
