When Evolution of New York Subways was published in 1997, I bought a copy immediately. Back then, I thought the book was an incredible tribute to the rolling stock of the New York City subway system. I also thought it would be a very long time before such a volume could be surpassed in any way. In 2004 (the centennial year for the original IRT subway)we have New York Subways: An Illustrated History of New York City's Transit Cars. This book is even better than its predecessor. It boasts a vertical format that is easier to handle and read. Many of the original photos have been improved, information is updated to reflect the latest subway rolling stock, and the color section has been expanded. Congratulations to Gene Sansone on an outstanding effort! Simply put, if you are a fan of the New York City Subway system, this is a must-have addition to your book collection.

Sugar And Spite: A Savannah Reid Mystery (Savannah Reid Mysteries) Review

Sugar And Spite: A Savannah Reid Mystery (Savannah Reid Mysteries)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Savannah Reid lost her San Carmelita police job when she challenged the authority of her ruthless superior Chief Norman Millquist. Savannah opened up the Moonlight Magnolia Detective agency offering private investigative services. Norman plans to be the next mayor of the small California town. Still loyal to her former police partner Dirk Colter, Savannah helps him on stakeouts when she can. When Dirk's former wife Polly returns to town, Savannah expects trouble. Polly dumped Dirk for a younger musician, but now wants something from the cop.
Savannah's instincts prove accurate as a hysterical Dirk tells her that Polly is dead. The murder weapon is Dirk's gun. Dirk claims he was taking a shower, heard a shot, and ran outside to observe an intruder bending over Polly's body. Dirk never catches the culprit. The police arrest him for premeditated murder. This leaves it to Savannah and her cohorts to find the real killer.
Savannah Reid is a sexy, voluptuous person who loves to eat and does not care that she is a full figured woman. She believes in herself and her worth, rejecting those who belittle her. G.A. McKevett provides a strong mystery that showcases Savannah's abilities. The pieces to the puzzle are in front of the reader, but placing them in the right positions is difficult and fun. The secondary characters are a group of eccentrics while the background of a Renaissance Fair adds to the overall enjoyment. SUGAR AND SPITE is a wonderful entry in a superb series.

Max Allan Collins is the best writer for the CSI novels so far, but Jerome Priesler did a great job. I did find it weird that the cast was split into the swing shift and graveyard shift again. I enjoyed this more than the previous book, In Extremis, by another author.

Lights, Camera... (Nancy Drew: All New Girl Detective #5)
Average Reviews:

Nancy Drew was asked to be in a movie about a crime she had solved in the past. During the making of the movie a series of unfortunate events occurred. So this book explains how Nancy Drew put all the clues together to explain the events that happend.
Personally, I liked the fact that the book kept you thinking on who the criminal(s) might be. What I did not particularly like was the irritating way that the problems kept happening one after the other.
Nancy Drew is my favorite character in the book. She is very intelligent and uses her brains to figure out all the problems.
What made me like her was that in one part of the book it says, "At first everyone thought it was part of the movie, but I recognized Chief McGinnis's voice." I think it takes a good detective to recognize those kind of things.
If you like mystery and a constantly changing story, then this book is a good choice for you.
After reading the book, I would wonder why some people commit silly crimes.
This is a great book. It is one of those books that has all of the elements of a good mystery book. It is easy to read, keeps you guessing and can be enjoyed by all ages of people that like a good mystery.

New Vanguard 82: V-2 Ballistic Missile 1942-52 Review

New Vanguard 82: V-2 Ballistic Missile 1942-52
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Once again, Stephen J. Zaloga delivers a handy summary of an important technical military subject in his Osprey Vanguard volume entitled, V-2 Ballistic Missile 1942-1952. While Zaloga has only 44 pages in this format, he packs it full of information culled from the considerable literature on this subject, resulting in a superb synthesis. Unlike other, longer works, Zaloga does not dwell overly long on the development aspects of the V-2 program, but devotes most of his summary to the operational use of this revolutionary weapon.
V-2 Ballistic Missile 1942-1952 begins with an 11-page section on early German rocket development, but the bulk of the volume focuses on the organization and procedures of V-2 launch units. Seven pages are spent on final German rocket designs, an analysis of the V-2 campaign, and a brief description of the post-war US and Soviet tests of captured V-2s. The color plates, by Robert Calow, include: early German test rockets; the Wizernes missile bunker; camouflage schemes; a cross-section of the V-2; a mobile launch site; and a Feuerleitpanzer fire control vehicle. Zaloga also provides several very handy appendices: A-4 missile manufacture (broken down by site and monthly production figures); V-2 targets; and Russian post-war production of V-2 derivatives. In addition, Zaloga provides an annotated bibliography, which includes Internet sites of interest.
Zaloga sees the V-2 as a technical marvel that was simply not ready for prime time, or as he puts it, a case of "too much too soon." The V-2 program cost about $2 billion - equivalent to the American Manhattan Project - but it delivered a weapon of very limited practical military value. Indeed, the V-2 was a very fragile weapon, with many ruined by rough handling on the ground and even more disintegrating in flight. Of 6,422 V-2s built, only 3,172 were launched and only about 37% fell near their intended targets. Indeed, Zaloga notes that the Luftwaffe's V-1 program, while technically less sophisticated, was much more militarily significant since it was cheaper to build and more reliable. Zaloga's description of the technical problems associated with the V-2's tricky liquid oxygen fuel and its limited guidance system are interesting, as well as his discussion of the gradual take-over of the V-2 program by the SS. There are also details about how Allied intelligence learned about the V-2 program, including recovery of parts from V-2 test crashes in Poland and Sweden.
Zaloga's review of V-2 operations also provides insight into the difficulties of targeting mobile ballistic missile launchers, insights that are still useful today. As happened during the "Scud Hunt" in 1991 during Desert Storm, Zaloga notes that the Allies in 1944 we forced for political reasons to devote about 25% of their tactical bombers to hunt V-2 sites that were hitting England. Amazingly, despite complete Allied air superiority, the Germans were still able to launch V-2s from Holland against London as late as 27 March 1945. However, due to the difficulty in detecting the launch sites and the impossibility of interception once launched, Zaloga notes that less Allied resources were devoted to deal with the V-2 than the V-1. The other lesson to be digested from the V-2 experience is that ballistic missiles with high explosive warheads might be difficult to stop, but the damage that they can inflict is not comparable with what could be achieved with conventional, large-scale air attacks.

The German A-4 ballistic missile, better known by its propaganda name of V-2, was the world's first successful ballistic missile, breaking through the atmosphere to reach its target quicker. It was a forerunner of Cold War ballistic missiles and its combat use in 1944-45 set the pattern for the use of Scud ballistic missiles in recent decades. The V-2 offensive lasted from September 1944 until March 1945 with over 3,000 rockets being launched. This book examines the combat record of the V-2 in World War II, with a special focus on how a German missile battalion actually prepared and fired its missiles.

Rising from Katrina is a beautiful tribute to the very wonderful people of Mississippi and the horrendous ordeal they have been dealt. It is a story of hope and love, and a story of strength and faith. It is very well done and beautifully written. If you care about what has happened along the Gulf Coast and fear forgetting, buy this book. Kathleen Koch is a superb writer and she brings us into the world of the characters who are Mississippi, and I mean that in a very positive way. Thank you Ms Koch for giving your time and energy to help your hometown and for sharing this incredibly personal and powerful book with us.

Hurricane Katrina left Eddie Favre, the affable mayor of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, with nothing but the shirt and shorts he was wearing. State and local officials offered to send him pants, but Favre declined. ''Wearing long pants sends a signal that everything is okay,'' he insisted. ''And until such time as everything is okay here, I'll wear my shorts.''Even George W. Bush took notice. ''I arrive here at this important school and he's got short pants on,'' the president remarked during a visit nearly five months after the storm. ''Eddie, I like a man who sticks to his guns.''Those who read this moving story of the small town of Bay St. Louis and the Mississippi Gulf Coast will discover an entire region that did just that. The 2005 hurricane season was the most devastating in history. People from the Bahamas to Mexico to Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida suffered a record 15 hurricanes, four of which reached Category 5 strength.Katrina was the costliest. Images from the Superdome and the rooftops of New Orleans are seared into the American consciousness. But few realize the Mississippi Gulf Coast was where Katrina hit full force and where the destruction was worst. Entire towns were reduced to shoulder-high rubble by the winds and the unprecedented 30-foot storm surge.Bay St. Louis was the former home of CNN correspondent Kathleen Koch. From her initial Katrina assignment in Alabama, Koch headed west in the storm's aftermath. The closer she got to her community, the more personal the story became. Old friends asked her to search for loved ones whose bodies would soon be found. She reported from the sites of once-beautiful homes--including her own--stripped to their concrete pads. Time and again, she heard residents pleas to spread the word about the dire needs on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.Rising from Katrina is a story of the kindness of strangers, of minor miracles--and, above all, of how despite bureaucratic snarls and insurance battles a region rolled up its sleeves and rebuilt. It is also the story of a veteran reporter who, struggling to maintain her objectivity amid loss, traveled her own personal path from devastation to recovery.

Twice Buried (Missing Mysteries) Review

Twice Buried (Missing Mysteries)

Having read several of the later Undersherrif Bill Gastner mysteries I found myself a little torn with this one.
I love the character of Bill Gastner. The characters in this series are particularly well-developed and realistic. The procedures in this book are thorough and seemingly well-depicted (I'm not a police officer but it seemed pretty kosher to me) except for one very large hole in the way the investigation developed - a whole line of investigation was ignored that seemed obvious to me. This hurt the integrity of the book in my eyes but I still give it 4 stars.
If you are a fan of Tony Hillerman's Navajo Tribal Police books you should check out this series.

This fishing guide is good. It provides a lot of details needed to fish fresh and saltwater. No guidebook can cover every body of water in equally great detail. But Rudnick covers the basics well for just about all the waters I fish.
I use the book frequently to plan trips. It's been accurate so far. Some of the best ideas in my book, "How to catch salmon, sturgeon, lingcod, rockfish, & halibut along the pacific coast," came from Terry's contributions. I recommend his book.

V-2: A Combat History of the First Ballistic Missile (Weapons in History) Review

V-2: A Combat History of the First Ballistic Missile (Weapons in History)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Author T.D. Dungan's "V-2: A Combat History of the First Ballistic Missile," is much more than its title implies. It is actually a comprehensive and detailed history of the genesis, development, testing, production, operational deployment and legacy of the liquid-fueled rocket with which Nazi Germany bombarded London, Antwerp and other targets during the last seven months of World War II. The brainchild of Dr. Wernher von Braun, who came to America after the War and headed NASA's Saturn V moon rocket program in the 1960s, the V-2 ("Vergeltungswaffe Zwei," or "Vengeance Weapon Two") was the world's first operational ballistic missile weapon system. Even though it was relatively unreliable and not very accurate, the V-2 occupies a special place on the road to space. Historians may argue about whether or not the German rocket team really had their eyes on the stars when they built the V-2. But it is undeniable that the big Nazi rocket, hundreds of which the United States and Soviet Union confiscated and launched after the War, jump-started the space programs of both nations.
"V-2" is uniquely valuable because it integrates rarely-seen technical information with the overall story of the rocket. If you like "engineering detail," you won't be disappointed. For example, there are excellent annotated line drawings of both the V-2 (internal and external) and its "Meillerwagen" transporter/erector. There is a detailed layout of a typical V-2 launching site in a forest clearing that includes all the vehicles and ancillary items of equipment required to service, prepare and launch the missile. There is an interesting double-page drawing of northwestern Europe that shows all V-2 launching sites and the missiles' trajectories to their targets. There is also a drawing of the notorious "Mittelwerk" underground assembly plant in the Harz Mountains, with the 46 tunnels identified as to which part of the manufacturing process each one housed in the production of V-1s, V-2s and Junkers "Jumo" turbojet engines.
Well-illustrated with black-and-white photographs, some of which I have not seen in print before, "V-2" is a superb stand-alone volume. An extensive bibliography steers the interested reader to sources of more information. My only criticism, and it is so minor that it scarcely deserves mention, is that there are several typographical and grammatical errors (such as the author's consistent misspelling of "ordnance" as "ordinance") that one last word-by-word proofreading would probably have corrected. But none of these are errors of fact, and they in no way detract from the readability, usefulness and historical value of this outstanding work. I give "V-2" my highest recommendation.

In August 1944, Londoners thought the war might be over by Christmas. But on September 8, 1944, in the London suburb of Chiswick, a thunderous double-boom was heard followed by a huge plume of black smoke rising high into the air. Several minutes later another explosion rocked the earth near Epping. There had been no warnings, no drone of aircraft above, just sudden devastation. "Operation Penguin," the German V-2 offensive, had begun. The A-4 rocket, better known as the V-2, Vergeltungswaffen Zwei, or "Vengeance Weapon 2," was the first ballistic missile to be used in combat. Soaring over 50 miles high at supersonic speeds, the V-2 would strike its target within 5 minutes of launching. Once in the air its deadly warhead was unstoppable. The ancestor of all Cold War and modern day ballistic missiles, as well as the rockets used for space exploration, the V-2 could not win the war for Germany—it was too expensive, too complicated, and too inaccurate—but its unprecedented invulnerability and influence on Allied war planning made the V-2 and the advancements it represented the ultimate war prize, and British, American, and Soviet forces scrambled to seize German rocket technology along with its scientists and engineers. In V-2: A Combat History of the First Ballistic Missile, T. D. Dungan relies on an unparalleled collection of original documents, unpublished photographs, and accounts from those who were there to provide a complete description of the V-2 program, the missile's use in combat, and the race to capture its secrets.

Chain Reaction (Perfect Chemistry Novels) Review

Chain Reaction (Perfect Chemistry Novels)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the record, I fully blame Simone Elkeles for my obsession with the young adult genre. Before I got my hands on a copy of Perfect Chemistry, I thought YA novels were strictly PG rated and the most passionate displays of affection was a line saying, "We made out last night." Nothing was ever discussed in detail, let alone the smoldering way Elkeles writes a love scene. As if that wasn't enough, she doesn't flinch when tackling tough subjects like gang violence and teen sexuality.
I fell in love with this series three years ago, and this final installment was just as hot and sultry as the previous two books. Luis, being the youngest, was so much fun. He didn't have the jaded cynicism his older brothers had going into this book. He was a reckless, fun guy who liked to make people laugh. This is what made the revelation about his past all the more saddening (sorry, that's all I'll say - read the book to find out what happens).
I wasn't all that crazy about Nikki. I understood she got hurt in a major way by a major creep, but I felt some times she took her mistrust in Luis too far. Towards the end I warmed up to her, but for a little while I thought she needed a good slap. I did, however, adore her friends Derek and Kendall. For some reason I looked forward to any scene they were in.
I felt parts of this book, especially the end, moved too fast. I would have liked a little more filling in the Latino Blood storyline and Luis's reactions to what he discovered. I felt that came and went too fast. Then again, it might just be me with a serious case of the Oliver Twists, making grabby hands and begging for some more because I knew this series was coming to a close.
It could be argued that Elkeles's books in this series are formulaic. After reading the first, the other two play out the same way, but I went in expecting that. There are no real surprised, but I recently saw on the news that people are almost 40% happier when they read a book or see a movie already knowing how it will end. This book is a classic example of that: I love knowing that in the Simone Elkeles's world love truly can conquer all.

In this book, Steve shares his years of experience fishing one of the East Coast's best, yet most underrated, smallmouth rivers - the Upper Potomac. This book literally walks the reader 57 miles upstream starting at the Chain Bridge in the District of Columbia to end at Dam 3 above Harpers Ferry.

Given that a picture is worth 1,000 words, the book includes over 200 augmented with 42 maps and 45 tables of critical information that allow you to determine the right place to go and the right time to be there.

Other Potomac books assume you have a boat; this one assumes you fish on your feet. Steve dedicates the entire book to guiding you to locations where you can wade or fish from the shore. It includes 32 named chapters that discuss the major access points in Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia. Many contain additional information on minor access points within the same area; expanding the total geographic coverage dramatically. This book is "internet aware" and includes 208 GPS coordinates usable in Google Maps for precise directions as well as the satellite view to obtain a birds-eye perspective. In the eBook version available from CatchGuides.com, clicking on the coordinate automatically launches Google Maps.

To ensure this book reflected the broadest base of experience possible, Steve enlisted members of the Washington Metropolitan area's premier bass fishing clubs to "fact check" the book.Steve incorporated their comments and suggestions, resulting in a comprehensive perspective on this great river.

Comments from the fact checkers include:

"I read your book today and it is excellent.I have been a guide on the Shenandoah and Potomac for more than 30 years and your descriptions from Brunswick to Harpers Ferry are excellent."

"Wow, what a treasure of information! What a treat to read. Thanks for doing this."

Kayak and canoe fishing enthusiasts will find this book to be equally useful.

I liked this book so much, I wouldn't return it to the library! So I'm going to buy a copy.
It's a very thorough introduction to training horses - just what I was looking for. From starting with a foal to riding in the saddle in a wide variety of environments, she has covered it well. I recommend it.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Storey's Guide to Training Horses

It all starts with good horse sense. Anyone who understands how horses think, knows the basics of good horsemanship, and is aware of general safety practices when working around horses already has a leg up on what is necessary to train a horse.
STOREY'S GUIDE TO TRAINING HORSES is a comprehensive volume that builds on that foundation and takes the trainer step-by-step through the training process, from handling the foal to ground work to mounted lessons and trailer training. While most training books focus on riding, this guide takes a broad view, presenting different methods and alternatives so you can tailor your approach to your particular horse.

Author, rancher, and horse trainer Heather Smith Thomas explains how to avoid common mistakes and how to ensure mutual respect and a productive working relationship with your horse. She begins with training psychology - including how to think like a horse and the origins of the flight or fight response. Then she covers handling and positive, progressive training techniques for each stage of the horse's development. And since each horse is different, Thomas offers a variety of training methods designed to suit different temperaments. Furthermore, she emphasizes that a smart trainer puts the horse first, letting the horse learn at its own pace rather than trying to force the animal to an unrealistic training timetable.

Complete with a glossary of equine terms and a list of resources for additional information on horse training - including training clinics - this is an authoritative reference for trainers of all levels.

She goes "goth" and begins to associate with a group of drug-addicted, indigent teenagers and young adults who do not attend school, do not work, and lack appropriate parental supervision. Once an honor student, JR becomes defiant and hostile toward her family.
When her mother and father learned she was talking to much older boys on the telephone, they forbid her to take calls from boys. JR has a girlfriend call her home instead, who then passes the phone to one or more boys.
When her parents learn she is communicating with these boys through various internet sites, they confiscate her computer. JR uses the computers at the public library.
When ordinary restrictions do not have the desired behavioral effect, JR is grounded. She uses a basement window to leave the house under the cover of darkness.
As if all this were not enough, JR forms a romantic relationship with 23 year old Jeremy Steinke. Like the other young people in the Goth Crowd, Jeremy is a drug addicted, unemployed, high school dropout living with his alcoholic mother in a cheap trailer across town.
In many ways, Jeremy Steinke garners a good deal more sympathy than JR ever will. She was a 12 year old child whose parents applied the consequences any loving parent would to keep her safe and hold her accountable. Her childhood does not include neglect, abuse, addiction, or any other extraordinary dysfunction. Rather than the obvioulsy troubled young man Jeremy was, JR presents as a bratty, unappreciative, and seriously mentally disturbed little girl.
In an act of ill-planned desperation and impulsivity, JR finally summons Jeremy to her home one dark night to murder her parents. There is some disagreement about who stabbed JR's 8 year old brother in the chest. This information is irrelevant to the prosecution of the case, however, and does not matter.
All of the information provided would surely signify a slam-dunk in the genre of True Crime. However, as with all True Crime stories, it is the use of the written word that either makes it or breaks it. Unforunately, RUNAWAY DEVIL suffers badly from a lack of creative prose or any stylistic use of language. The facts are reported adequately, but there is no attempt to create strong visual images for the reader. Similarly, there is little attempt to induce true horror in the reader, horror this crime surely must have caused for thousands of middle-class families everywhere.
In short, RUNAWAY DEVIL is dull. It was not so boring that I opted not to finish the book, but neither could I wait for it to end. My general impression was one of tepid disappointment.
There are two interesting chapters in the book. The first covers the trial of JR. The second is the Epilogue. Both of these chapters provide psychological exploration of the motives and feelings that would drive a 12 year old girl to plan the murder of her entire family. Although the strict prohibitions governing Canadian law did not allow for the release of all medical and psychological information available, the information that is allowed is enough. JR was later diagnosed with Oppositional-Defiant Disorder and a Conduct Disorder. "Conduct Disorder" is a legal and psychiatric term used for those children who engage in sociopathic behavior but cannot yet be labeled a "sociopath" because of their age.
As part of a bizarre and rather stupid attempt to gain a more complete confession from JR, one police investigator asked her to write an "apology letter" to her already deceased parents and younger brother. The manner is which JR begins this letter says it all: "Dear my loverdly parental units."
Perhaps most disturbing is this: Counting the time served prior to her trial, JR was sentenced to the maximum of 6 years. Once released from custody at the age of 18 in 2012, JR will be under "community supervision," or probationary restrictions for another 4 years. When JR is 22, she will be free of all supervision or restriction of any kind. If she does not commit another crime for an additional 5 years, her youth record will be expunged. At the age of 27, JR will then be free to work as a teacher, a health care provider, a social worker, or anything else she so desires. She will be free to have children of her own. She will be under no obligation to disclose her criminal past, nor will any record of it exist. A child responsible for the slaughter of her entire family - a triple homicide - will be free to disappear and remain forever anonymous.
No one in Canada (or anywhere else) is happy about this.
I really wanted to like this book more. It held such promise. The facts of the case are riveting. The writing is not. I read True Crime almost exclusively. Perhaps my standards are rather specific, but they are not exceptional or unrealistic. RUNAWAY DEVIL is not a 5 star story. It is not even a 3 star story. It is a book that reads with all the emotion of a morning newspaper account. I cannot recommend it.
