High Wire (Tom Clancy's Net Force Explorers, Book 14) Review

High Wire (Tom Clancy's Net Force Explorers, Book 14)

...In the year 2025,Net Force Explorer Andy Moore is asked to help the Cservanka Brothers Circus to program virtual animals and a few other things. As he gets closer to Papa Cservanka's granddaughter, Syeira, a vivacious and strong willed teenager, Andy finds strange things happening under the big top. As he begins exploring the strange events, he finds that the cyber-circus could be under the threat of a black market ring. Can Andy figure everything out before someone gets hurt... including him?
For a Young Adult book, "High Wire" is great for all teenagers. With a well-thought out plot, this story will please those looking for a good read. Mel Odom, the author, gives plenty of twists and turns, having the whole plot well balanced with mystery, excitement, love, and adventure. As for myself, since I love using the internet, find this Net Force story intriguing as the Net has no boundaries.
The character of Andy Moore is a fun main character. For a teenager, he's very smart and it's interesting how he figures out problems and comes up with remarkable plans. I also would love to read more about all of his Net Force Explorer friends, especially Matt Hunter and Mark Grideley, called the Squirt. And though she is only mentioned and she doesn't come out in the story, I would love to read a story about Megan O'Malley who's supposed to be a martial artist.

Tin City (Mac McKenzie Mysteries) Review

Tin City (Mac McKenzie Mysteries)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the second book in a new series focused on Rushmore "Mac" McKenzie, who used to be a St. Paul policeman, but retired after collecting a $3 million bounty on an embezzler. Now, he does the occasional "favor" for his friends and otherwise takes it pretty easy. At the start of _Tin City_, Mac gets a call from Mr. Mosley, an old friend of his father's, who is a beekeeper and wants Mac's help figuring out why an unusually large number of his bees have been dying off lately. Mac calls in a favor from a friend in the entomology department at the University of Minnesota and it's not too long before the friend's graduate teaching assistant has tracked down the source of a pesticide being sprayed on a neighboring property, which is drifting over to Mosley's hives and killing his bees. When the teaching assistant calls in and reports being shot at, Mac and Mosley hurriedly drive to the scene to offer their assistance. At the scene, they're confonted by a man holding a shotgun and telling them they're trespassing. They leave, only to involve one of Mac's other friends, a lawyer, by having him send a threatening letter to the property's owner. From there, events suddenly turn violent--Mosley is killed and the lawyer's wife is assaulted, leaving Mac a very angry man who must get to the bottom of things and track down the man responsible.
This was an excellent book, with its settings and locations around the Twin Cities brought to convincing life. Much of the story takes place in a tiny municipality called Hilltop, the "tin city" of the title, which is an actual place, a city of mobile homes completely surrounded by the larger city of Columbia Heights. Mac pretends to be a writer for _Trailer Life_ magazine and interviews several of the residents, allowing Housewright to include some fascinating historical details about this real place (I checked my Twin Cities street atlas just to make sure, and sure enough, there is a Hilltop, right where Housewright says it is). Along the way, Mac falls in love with Penelope Glass, a song writer and the neglected wife of a rogue FBI agent. The scenes describing their conversations and a dinner they have together have a real sweetness to them. Mac finds himself in the middle of a complicated mess, involving a mobster on the run from a botched assassination attempt in New York and a couple of local gangster wanna-be's, and things are complicated further when the FBI agent places a locate and detain order for him, requiring Mac to go underground.
Mac's an appealing character, with lots of friends in high and low places. His loyalty to his friends and willingness to do what it takes to make things right, as well as his thoughts on his deceased father and the hand Mr. Mosley had in bringing him up to be a "good guy," and the uncertainty he feels when he gets some measure of vengeance, make him a pretty complicated character. _Tin City_ is an excellent follow-up to the very strong _A Hard Ticket Home_ and, hopefully, there will be many more "Mac" McKenzie novels to follow. Highly recommended.

Frisco Pigeon Mambo Review

Frisco Pigeon Mambo

I have become an avid C.D. Payne fan after reading Youth in Revolt for the first time last year. And with this book he continues to crack me up beyond all belief. An absolutely absurd notion of (almost) self aware chain smoking sherry swilling pigeons who escape from their cages in a berkeley laboratory and take San Francisco by storm. Again, like Civic Beauties, this book isnt quite as funny as either of the Nick Twisp books (if that is possible), but it holds its own against other books of this nature. These pigeons have some of the funniest one liners I have ever read. The conclusion is mighty funny, and also does an excellent job at poking fun at us humans for some of our ridiculous assumptions of grandiosity. Reading the back cover of the book I laughed thinking how in god's name would Payne pull this off, yet he does, and with authority. Please read this, you will get a kick out of it.

Matchbox Toys 1947-2003: Identification & Value Guide Review

Matchbox Toys 1947-2003: Identification and Value Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I collect superfast Matchbox from 1969-present. This book only lists 1-75 (1/64th scale) Matchbox cars which is fine for my use. It is good becasue it lists all models in alphabetical order so you can cross-reference the number (1-75) of the model - most model numbers are not imprinted on late model cars so it is helpful in that respect. However, I found it lacking in the number of variations it listed. There is no consistent differentiation between wheel type (other than RW and SF), interior color, stickers/decals or other minor variations. This guide does not use the same numbering system as Charlie Mack's Encyclopedia (e.g. 14 A 3) making it difficult to have the references compliment each other. This guide does list more recent models where as Charlie Mack's guide is typically long overdue when a new edition comes out. But again, this one is not as complete regarding model variation so you may not know if you are collecting all the variations of a particular model you want in your collection. Another positive point of this book though is that not all pictures are of perfect cars -- the cars in the photos have a little play wear and is more reflective a practical collectors cars rather than some ideal collection most of us will never have. Lastly, in comparison to Charlie Mack's guide, I find it nice becasue most of this book does dedicate it's picture space to the 1-75 models. One of the dissappointments I have found with Mr. Mack's guide is that it lists a lot of subtle variation (i.e. light blue, mid blue and dark blue Soopa Coopa) but does not show pictures on how to tell the difference (neither does this one -- it doesn't even try to differentiate). Also, much of the picture space in Mr. Mack's guide is with models that no one I know really collects (i.e. NOT 1-75 series, super kings and models of yesteryear). I'm still not sure where 1/2 of the pics in Charlie Macks book come from (I've been collecting MB superfast for 20 years) -- perhaps thats why it is called an encyclopedia. Dana Johnson's book simplifies things but does not take it to the next level by any means.
Basically, I use Dana Johnson's book as a supplement to find model numbers so I can look up varaitions in late model cars in Charlie Mack's guide. I do think Mr. Macks guide can be too complete, in that it lists more model variations than most people can possibly collect. However, Dana Johnson's guide is too incomplete. I prefer Mr. Macks guide becasue it lists all known variations and allows me to decide which variations I think are significant to collect.

Our fourth edition promises to be the most user-friendly Matchbox collector's guide ever produced. While most publications on this subject are organized by model number or year of introduction, this book is arranged alphabetically by model name and description. Well over a thousand photographs are included in this latest edition, with multiple variations pictured of selected models, all incorporated into a cohesive guide to early Lesney models, the Matchbox basic (1 - 75) series, Two-Packs, Matchbox Collectibles, 2004 values. AUTHORBIO: Dana Johnson is an authority on collectible toy cars, including Matchbox, Hot Wheels, and many diecast models. His extensive personal collection includes mostly diecast models from all over the world. He has written several books: Matchbox Toys, 1947 to 2003, Toy Car Collector's Guide, and Collector's Guide to Diecast Toys & Scale Models. REVIEW: This book will have collectors racing to the bookstores. It is an all-new revised edition, this time organized alphabetically by model name and description for ease in identification. The success of International's 1950s semi-trucks continued into the 1960s. Many series were carried over from the 1950s, but International now offered more models in each series to make them more versatile. The pictures you see in this book mainly cover the bigger straight trucks and over-the-road and off-highway trucks; the popular trucks like the V series, R series, D-400, DCO-400, CO-4000, and the line of "stars," to mention a few. As you look at them, enjoy and admire them, as many are long gone.

Ingenious Angler: Hundreds of Do-It-Yourself Projects and Tips to Improve Your Fishing Boat and Tackle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book covers a large gamut of things of interest to fishermen and contains many useful tips for rigging your boat/gear. As a long-time fisherman but new boat owner, I found this book encourages you to think outside the box in how you use your boat and tackle. I found a lot of value in the author's many years of experience fishing the Chesapeake (my area), and the fishing tips that come across in his descriptions of the projects. I would point out that a few of the projects are homemade versions of things that are now available in your local boating store or tackle shop (ex. pvc rod holders, built-in tackle box storage, tool holders, etc), and a few are perhaps even a little hokey--something you might only do with an older boat or to save a few bucks. However, the gamut of material this book covers from aluminum to fiberglass boats, rigs to rod repairs, etc. should appeal to all kinds of anglers. Some projects are great for those who are looking to make some of their own accessories; other projects feature practical tips that would be helpful to even the experienced angler.

The Chase: A Hunt Country Suspense Novel Review

The Chase: A Hunt Country Suspense Novel

I really enjoyed Jan Neuahrth's first novel The Hunt, but I LOVED The Chase! The characters are so true to life, I really felt I could relate to them, especially Kendall. And Neuharth really knows how to build suspense. The book isn't short but the story moves along quickly and I kept telling myself I'd just read "one more chapter" . . . and ended up reading the entire book in a day. The ending doesn't hint at a sequel the way the ending in The Hunt did, but I hope she has another book on the way.

At the Altar of Speed: The Fast Life and Tragic Death of Dale Earnhardt
Average Reviews:

I love books about NASCAR. As a female fan of the sport, I love to learn about not only the history of NASCAR but about the men who make NASCAR so popular. This book is not only for Dale Earnhardt fans but I would recommend it for those people who didn't like him. I think they will be surprised at how different Dale Earnhardt was off the track. "The Intimidator" only describes his on-track persona.
What makes this book a great read is that with each story you can almost hear the sadness in the voices of those folks who have lost a very special friend. Some of the tales told are humorous and with each recollection you learn more about Dale Earnhardt the man, husband, father, and friend.
Leigh Montville has put together what I can honestly say is the best tribute to a man who is missed by so many of us. He made me realize NASCAR will never ever be the same without that Goodwrench Black Number 3 Monte Carlo of Dale Earnhardt.
Dale, Rest in Peace!

Scavenger Hunt Review

Scavenger Hunt
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's just the end of January 2003 as I sit here with snow on the ground and Robin Mink on the CD player, so you have to understand that it's way too early to be making statements like the one I'm going to make. I can't help it, though. I'm going to go ahead and predict that, come December, Robert Ferrigno's novel SCAVENGER HUNT is going to be on my Top Ten Best of 2003 list.
I know, I know --- it's tough to make a prediction like that so early in the year. But SCAVENGER HUNT is the book that Ferrigno's legion of followers has been waiting for. It is not merely a great Ferrigno book or even a great mystery. It is a great novel, period. It has all of the elements: tight plotting, memorable prose and characters that leap off of the page and into your world. It's a book that you swim in and maybe drown in, as opposed to wade through. Readable? Hah! Try to stop!
SCAVENGER HUNT brings intrepid SLAP reporter Jimmy Gage back for another go-round. SCAVENGER HUNT is not a sequel to FLINCH, where we first met Gage; no, SCAVENGER HUNT stands quite well on its own. Ferrigno fleshes Gage out and goes deeper into his character, making him more three-dimensional and ultimately more likable. This time around, Gage is on a Hollywood party scavenger hunt when he encounters Garrett Walsh, a former movie director flavor-of-the-month whose career abruptly came to an end when he was arrested for the rape and murder of an underage girl. Walsh pled guilty and, under the terms of a plea bargain, spent seven years in prison. Newly released, Walsh feels that Gage is just the ticket to help him clear his name. He plans to refurbish his reputation through Fall Guy, a movie script he is working on and that he swears will tell the story of how he was set up. Just a couple of weeks after they meet, however, Gage finds Walsh dead in a fishpond, apparently having drowned while intoxicated. Gage's reporting instincts immediately kick in --- Walsh's story of being set up has the ring of truth to it and his accidental death, while convenient with his unfortunate drug use, is just a bit too convenient. What Gage doesn't know, however, is that his investigation is attracting the notice of the wrong people and putting him squarely in the crosshairs of danger.
Ferrigno does a simply incredible job of misdirection here, yet he plays fair every step of the way. I thought I had SCAVENGER HUNT figured out a number of times and was totally wrong more than once. Ferrigno also does an incredible job of pacing, dropping major and minor bombs throughout SCAVENGER HUNT from the beginning to the end. All of the characters, from the one-page walk-ons to the major players, are interesting and real. And wait until you encounter Sugar. Just wait. This is an unforgettable book, filled with unforgettable characters.

Blood of the Prodigal (Ohio Amish Mystery Series #1) Review

Blood of the Prodigal (Ohio Amish Mystery Series #1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
P.L. Gaus is quite a storyteller, and his first novel is a page-turner! He has a way of moving the action along and seamlessly blending in bits of local color and culture that compel the reader to stay with the book, just for the sheer pleasure of watching the story unfold. His first novel is a fascinating look at the Old Order Amish and their coexistence with die Hochen, their non-Amish or "English" neighbors.
I grew up in the area where the book takes place, and it was fun to read the very accurate descriptions of the region (particularly the weather!). Gaus paints a vivid picture of the rolling hills and farms of east central Ohio. My only request is that the next book be set during Autumn, so I can vicariously relive the cider-and-pumpkin days of my youth!
However, if I could, I'd give this book 4.5 stars rather than 5, for a couple of reasons. One is that the book suffers a bit from First Novel Syndrome, or perhaps it's just Small Press Syndrome. That is, it wants for a bit of editing. Some parts of the book just don't flow well, and I found myself having to re-read some passages to link up pronouns with their subjects. The resolution of the mystery, while satisfying enough to keep me from condemning the book altogether, was a wee bit flimsy. What I thought was a glaring error in editing turned out to be a pivotal clue in solving the mystery, and while the lead character was trying to puzzle it out, I couldn't help shaking my head and thinking that only an idiot could have missed it. There also were a few loose ends left untied at the end of the book, and a few things that I thought deserved a more thorough explanation. And the most unforgivable sin of all: Gaus presents a rather inaccurate, derogatory view of Texans. I can't just let a thing like that slide, now can I? ;)
All in all, these minor flaws take very little away from the enjoyment of this fine book. The story is captivating, the characters, with a few minor exceptions, are multi-dimensional and "real", and Gaus' flair for establishing atmosphere is top notch. I'm very much looking forward to reading the next Dr. Michael Branden mystery!
