Not because he's a great writer or director, but because with every single project he makes me feel like I can DO this. I can make good movies that people will enjoy watching. And you can, too.
This is one of the most inspiring books on filmmaking I've ever read--it depicts, in detail, all the ups and downs that went into making and selling EL MARIACHI, the $7000 sensation that opened doors for Rodriguez.
A lot of filmmakers argue that EL MARIACHI isn't a great film, that the story's kind of silly, that the version that most of us saw had $500,000 worth of post-production work added, and on and on.
But they're talking about it. It's 2003 and people are still talking about the amazing feat Rodriguez pulled off with this film. For $7000 of his own money, plus a whole lot of blood, sweat and tears, he got himself noticed and made a career out of his hobby. "Do what you love, then find someone who will pay you to do it."
This is a how-to manual for the basement movie-maker, written by a man who is excited about using movies to tell his stories: in this book, in the commentary tracks for his movies, in his Ten-Minute Film School installments, I have never once felt like Robert Rodriguez was bored with either his work or his achievements. The guy has fun, and his personality gets its fingerprints all over his work--if you can't enjoy yourself while watching a Rodriguez movie, you're expecting too much and thinking too hard.
This guy is not changing the face of American cinema: he wants all of US to change the face of American cinema, and this book is an open invitation to do just that.
Devour Rodriguez. Consume this book and engorge yourself on his DVDs. Chow down on special features on how he did it that also show YOU how to do it. If, after a week-long diet of Robert Rodriguez, you DON'T want to make your own movie IMMEDIATELY, seek a different destiny: making movies is not for you.

Tiny Home to Call Your Own: Living Well in Just Right Houses Review

Tiny Home to Call Your Own: Living Well in Just Right Houses
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this book thinking it would help me design a small dwelling, but was disappointed. It doesn't contain house plans to compare or copy or detailed descriptions of handling essential systems (heating, plumbing, etc.). Instead it's more about psyching the reader up-- encouraging the reader that it is possible to live in a smaller home, how it could be good for them and the world, how there are issues they might need to deal with (e.g. getting rid of stuff).
That's fine I suppose, but the product seems a bit odd, since anyone who picks this book up to read it probably already believes its arguments on some level. And even those arguments are more anecdotal than systematic. This isn't research as much as it is a recounting of the authors' experiences with a certain kind of semi-suburban, semi-rural client, which again is fine, but it lacks scope and perspective.
I imagine that many readers are like myself, and are looking for more practical info about design and systems. For those things I would look to books like Lester Walker's A LITTLE HOUSE OF MY OWN: 47 GRAND DESIGNS FOR 47 TINY HOUSES and (for interiors) Cristina Paredes' SMALL SPACES: GOOD IDEAS. Both those books cover spaces of less than 500 square feet (unlike many books that are supposedly about "small" spaces and start at 1000 sq ft or larger). The Walker book has some great examples of small dwellings in American history. The Paredes book is a more urban, interior-designy book, but it mostly sticks to a level of artistry that is conceivable for many readers.

This is an absolute OUTSTANDING book! I'm a home woodworker with a very small shop. I don't have a great number of tools but the great thing about this book is that you don't need many. (Although I did go out and buy a table top bandsaw to simplify a few of the operations)
The plans in this book are very easy to follow and the results are incredible. I've only made one of the trucks, but it turned out great. I spent a few hours for two or three weekends and I just can't say enough about this book.
The author suggests using hardwoods, but I've had some difficulties finding a place to get them. My truck was made mostly with scraps that I had laying about my shop and you would never know. If you like small projects, these make perfect gifts as toys, or as models. I'm also certain that there is a market for the trucks as I've been asked to make several already.

Everyone wants to leave the rat race and try their own dreams and Carve Your Own Road, was written to help us do just that. It is based on the theory, Mindset on Clarity, which states picturing yourself doing successful things build the same neural pathways as doing them.
Jennifer and Joe Remling practice what they preach and the first part of the book is how they took the leap and realized their dreams using the Mindset of Clarity theory. A interesting and inspiring story, it sets the right tone to lead into the practical instructions of the theory.
Mindset of Clarity is in itself simple and Jennifer and Joe do a great job breaking down each step so anyone can understand. The instructions are enriched by real life stories of people who accomplished their dreams, which are weaved seamlessly into the text.
The only confusing part is the fact that some real life stories were stuck in-between the first part, which was Jennifer and Joe's story, and the instructions on the Mindset of Clarity. Since real life stories are so expertly meshed in the first and second part, the adding of a bulk of extra stories breaks up the otherwise great flow.

Lyons on Horses: John Lyons' Proven Conditioned-Response Training Program
Average Reviews:

I am not a horse trainer, and had never trained a horse before. However, I applied John Lyon's methods and had very satisfying results. I trained two horses, one of them is now a competition horse which because of its size and conformation (arabian like) would never have been expected to give what it does (its jumping far more than my experienced 10 year old jumper, and he's only 5 and only learning). The trainer has told us its because this horse has such a good disposition towards people and is so attentive and always willing, results of its initial training program, I'm convinced. And it wasn't even done by a proffesional! I highly recommend Lyon's methods. However, I had to read the book twice! Once to get the idea of what the system pointed at and to see what the puzzle looked like with all its pieces in place. Only in the second reading, done mostly in small parts at a time and just before practice was I able to go ahead and be sure of what I was doing and how I should do it. If you are not patient and do not have the time to slowly try to grab the meaning of this, perhaps the video should be a smarter choice.

Cycling For Profit: How to make a living with your bicycle (Cycling Resources Series) Review

Cycling For Profit: How to make a living with your bicycle (Cycling Resources Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The delivery of small packages by bicycle - the courier or messenger business - has a continuous history as old as the bicycle itself. In the twentieth century the role played by bicycles in delivering larger cargoes has been eroded by motor vehicles. As motor traffic finally limits its own speed in the city to that of the machines it replaced, the specialist load-carrying bicycle has made a comeback.
This book is the first how-to manual to emerge from the contemporary 'workbike' phenomenon. There are some pamphlets aimed at prospective bicycle delivery operators published by Detour, but this is an attempt to produce a more comprehensive reference.
The author of this book runs a bicycle delivery firm in Iowa, USA. Consequently, much of the advice is US-centric, such as details of tax law and insurance. However, the advice is still useful to people outside the USA because it gives the reader an idea of the kind of things they should be considering before starting in business.
The author covers the obvious areas such as selection of equipment and marketing your prospective service, but also offers the benefit of his experience on keeping a business viable and the recruitment and retention of staff, two areas where most workbike business failures occur.
A large proportion of the book is dedicated to real-life examples of workbikes in use that have proved successful. It begins with the kind of jobs that you can do without much special equipment, such as inner-city pizza, airline ticket and pharmaceutical deliveries, where speed - and therefore the lack of need to find a place to park a motor vehicle - are critical.
The book goes on to detail the ins and outs of grocery, printed matter and furniture delivery. Recyclable material collection is well covered, and mobile bike repair, lawn mowing and window cleaning get a mention too. Ice cream vending, that traditional British use for a workbike, is mentioned in passing - the Canadian operator interviewed for the book has a fleet of twelve hundred trikes.
Pedicabs - bicycle taxis - are covered, including the critical information about local laws that often forbid their use, or make them unviable. There is a view, concurrent with the idea of 'motor vehicle as liberation', that the workbike is backward and a form of exploitation, and must therefore be eliminated. Unfortunately, this aspect of anti-bike legislation is something we've recently exported globally, threatening the literal survival of thousands of becak operators in Indonesia alone. It's especially ironic that pedicabs are now seen every night in London, just as the authorities are clamping down on them in Jakarta.
The author admits to his interest as a manufacturer of trailers in the trike or quad bike versus trailer controversy. Three or four wheel bike advocates point to the greater stability and braking performance of their vehicles, while trailer fans boast how they can quickly detach the extra wheels when a small delivery is called for. It's a debate which is unlikely to be resolved.
The book contains a few typos, but as the only book of its' kind so far, it is required reading for anyone interested in the subject.

You don't need to be a professional racer to succeed at making your living by bike. This book shows the many ways it can be done-and how to go about making your business florish. The author draws upon his own experience as well as that of fellow bike-based businesses around the world. The first part of the book covers the various kinds of bicycle-powered operations that are open to full-time and part-time employment, listing what kind of equipment is needed and the practical aspects of marketing and operations. The second part of the book describes the specific requiements and modes of operation for each particular kind of business.

Transportation: A Supply Chain Perspective Review

Transportation: A Supply Chain Perspective

I just completed the course for which I bought this book. I found numerous issues in the text, wrong words: "managerial" versus "marginal". Dollar figures in examples with transposed numbers. I also found numerous issues in the questions for the tests that evidently came with the text. Someone needs to do a thorough editorial review of the text and issue an a companion errata insert or downloadable document. Some of these issues are very real impediments to understanding the point being made. That said, the book is chock full of current and interesting information and articles and real world stories. My advice is if something isn't making sense to you, parse the sentence to see if you can determine if any of the wording or numbers could be wrong.

Mama Rides Shotgun (A Mace Bauer Mystery) Review

Mama Rides Shotgun (A Mace Bauer Mystery)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Book quote: "Snores rumbled from inside Sal's Cadillac. How in the world could he sleep with Mama rattling the windows like that? I tapped at the glass by her head. `Wake up, it's me again.' I'd left my campsite without touching anything, backing away from my shredded tent the way I'd come. I didn't want to trample any evidence that might be collected. `Mama, open up. It's colder out here than a freezer full of sheared sheep.'"Following successful MAMA DOES TIME, Deborah Sharp continues the Mace Bauer series with MAMA RIDES SHOTGUN. In both, Sharp readers know that native Floridians take pride in being called Cracker. Now, Mama encourages daughter Mace to join her on a six-day horseback ride called The Florida Cracker Trail, a real-life ride in which the author participated. Originally, the Cracker Trail was a cattle drive, not unlike the Chisholm Trail. As always, Mama hopes to marry off her middle daughter who has entered the precarious age of 30-something--even considering for Mace an aged physician who is suspected in tampering with evidence in the subject murder.
This humorous mystery questions who would want to bump off wealthy Lawton Bramble by adding a "spice" not found at Publix grocery store to the cattleman's chili he prepared for riders on the Cracker Trail, chili "spicy enough to peel paint." Agatha Christie fans will be thrilled to learn that Sharp has written in as many possibilities as there are passengers on the Orient Express. Surely Rosalee Deveraux ("Mama") isn't a suspect, though Lawton has a heart that flutters like a candle and used to be Mama's beau--one of many. (Blanche Devereaux, eat your golden-girl heart out.) The young widow Wynonna, who beat Mama to the alter, displays insincere grief that's obvious even to the visually challenged. Lawton's handsome son Trey ("not worth a milk bucket under a bull") has some quirky issues most shrinks wouldn't touch with the proverbial pole--unbalanced and needing money to maintain a lifestyle to match his playboy image? Not even Lawton's level-headed adopted daughter, Belle, who doesn't arrive until after Lawton dies, can be ruled out. Of course, people often achieve wealth by walking over friends. Could childhood friend, Johnny Adams, whom Lawton used as a ladder to climb to success, taking Johnny's true love along for the climb, be the culprit? Curiously, Johnny is the Cracker Trail's chuck-wagon cook, easily able to add ingredients to Lawton's chili.
Pain-in-the-patootie matchmaking-Mama--who "can talk the ears off a row of corn" -- constantly tries to find a man for Mace. Trying to convince Mama not to get Mace married off is like pushing a horse with a rope. On the day Lawton chucks his chili, son Trey gets a face full of Mace, until his ex-fiancée catches the smooching couple. The apple doesn't fall far from her tree. Sexy Latin lover, Detective Carlos Martinez, is "hotter than a stolen pistol" and complicates matters--and not just with his lowly opinion of backwoods law enforcement officers. "My heart felt like it wanted to sprout wings and fly out of my mouth. I guess I wasn't over Carlos after all." Lacking horse sense, Martinez doesn't realize that when Mace's sisters--Mama's family--come along for the ride, they too may be in danger.
Mama's horse is injured and she needs another to complete the ride. But it's the widow Wynonna getting Mama to ride a high-spirited horse named Shotgun galloping away at the crack of a whip that gets Mace's knickers in a knot. Did the sound of a whip popping spook Shotgun, or is something more sinister buzzing about?
On an unusually cold February night, Mace discovers her tent shredded as a threat. Then, a rattlesnake is found inside a jacket and couldn't have gotten so close on its own--especially since reptiles are as cold-blooded as Lawton's murderer. Approaching a highway crossing with trucks barreling down on her, Trey's ex cracks a whip against Mace's horse, making it dash across, sure to make Mace road kill. A note that tells Mace she is on the right track mysteriously disappears, as she and her sisters group-think through the many possible suspects--and why Mace appears to be a likely target for a second homicide.
Mama's hometown Himmarshee is "an hour and a half from the Atlantic coast." But then, anywhere in Florida is within ninety minutes of some coast. Put a pin-spot near Lake Okeechobee's sparsely populated shore, and you've located the fictional fly-speck town. Sharp possibly is the only writer today who can use "critter" in a grammatically correct sentence. For a Southerner to see "y'all" used properly in a contemporary novel is as refreshing as iced tea on an August afternoon, "when it's so hot the hens are laying hard-boiled eggs."
Unlike other mystery series, where the protagonist shines as brilliantly as the desert sun, the Mace Bauer series is a family affair, a group effort to piece together the puzzle, though Mace is a maze of observation skills that any detective would love to own. Any of the "Mama" series is a light, breezy read. No autopsies or gruesome descriptions of disembowelment or decapitation with helicopter rotors. Just a good, old-fashioned mystery, the kind we read when school was out for summer. Though the online venues for which I review don't assign a Star Rating, Amazon and I do. I've reached into my Star Jar and pulled out a handful. Five are far too few.

During all of my time in the program, I've never been able to find something that has been able to capture the essence of FIRST. Something that is able to express the long nights, grueling machining, and endless problem solving. I have never found this atmosphere anywhere else in my life except in FIRST. The New Cool is able to capture the mood of a competition, the hurried scramble at the end of a build, and the pressure that each driver is fighting while piloting their robot around the playing field.
The New Cool details Amir and his rookie team in the FIRST Robotics competition Lunacy. Lunacy presented the team with several difficult obstacles which they needed to engineer reliable and efficient solutions to overcome. The change in the field base and the obscurely shaped game pieces were just two of the obstacles that teams were faced with.
Having competed in Lunacy, I can attest that it was one of the more difficult games FIRST has presented to teams. It changed many commonly known variables in the game and made designing an effective robot incredibly difficult. It was exciting to see the solutions that Amir and his team were able to both think of and implement, as they demonstrated both the creativity and drive of the team.
This novel, even for nontechnical people, presents an inspiring account of a remarkable group of students and their mentor. It's a great read that gives me reassurance that our future engineers and scientist will be able to take care of us.
