(More customer reviews)This is one of the greatest horse books I have ever read. The writing is near flawless, taking you inside Bird's world, and the plot is well thought-out and captivating. The story follows Bird, a damaged young girl who has not spoken since she was six. And Bird's not just an elective mute- she can communicate telepathically with animals. This ability adds a new, interesting edge, setting it apart from other horse stories.
Bird lives on a farm with her Aunt Hannah, where she rides every chance she can get. When an abused, beautiful horse arrives at the farm, Bird names him Sundancer ("Sunny") and slowly begins to help him heal, even as she gradually starts to understand herself and open up to the people around her. More tension is added when Bird's neglective, conceited mother shows up for a visit, a new boyfriend and Bird's little sister in tow. Horse shows, thieves, and daring escapades add to the suspense and action of this book. Strong characters shape the novel and make it all the more fascinating: Bird is emotionally troubled and struggles within herself, but as the book progresses you can see how much she grows- even overcoming her mutism. Sunny is a proud, powerful character who you come to know and love as you feel him open up to Bird. Overall, SUNDANCER is a warm, heartfelt story about healing and finding yourself. I loved it, and suggest that you don't pass this one up.

From the outside, 13-year-old Alberta - Bird - looks like a typical teenager. She spends her days attending school, riding horses, and helping out on the farm where she lives with her Aunt Hannah. But Bird is anything but typical. For one, she hears things that no one else hears, like the thoughts of the various animals she befriends. For another, she doesn't talk.Although it causes some problems at school, and with the kids who come to the farm to train, Bird's unwillingness to speak isn't a big issue for her aunt. In fact, when a new "problem" horse arrives at the farm, Hannah realizes that the strange and silent Bird is the only one who can break through his defenses. But when Bird's mother Eva decides to pay a visit - with a new boyfriend and Bird's younger sister in tow - old wounds are opened and everything changes.Shelley Peterson's Sundancer is a remarkable story about the damage that people can do to each other - and to the creatures that live with us - and the many ways that we can heal.
